Samsung Galaxy Note Blanks-out

Kuchhal

Lurker
Hi,

Hardly a month old Note, but it has started to blank-out (i.e. the phone becomes non-responsive with its screen completely black and no response on pressing any button, even power button).

Only option is to removing & re-plugging of the battery, and boot.

Anyone facing / knows about this issue ?

Thanks.

This has been termed the "sleep of death" and yes there are numerous (perhaps all) people having the same problem. I personally experience it the most after making a VoIP call.

Some people get this multiple times per day and some (like myself) only once per week or two. It certainly seems to be app related but randomly. Perhaps a generic Samsung or Gingerbread problem since I heard a Galaxy SII user complain about the same thing.

You don't need to remove the battery though. Just hold the power button for 10 seconds and the phone will reboot.

Eric Ritchie.

Erm... no it won't. Every time mine locked up nothing worked except pulling the battery. Eventually I factory reset mine as I got so sick of it (it was happening every other day). That was nearly a week ago and so far it hasn't happened again.

Really? Then perhaps we are looking at different problems since this always worked for me. Perhaps I am luckier than some after all ;)

I usually press power + volume + home key for 10 seconds and it has rebooted every time when I got stuck

is there a difference between pressing the combo and just the power button ?

I guess so then. Whenever mine locked up it was when I tried to wake it (press the home or power buttons). It didn't matter what I pressed it just wouldn't do anything. I never actually tried the 3 key method so always had to pull the battery.

Exactly my problem. I have a habit of locking the phone myself before putting it away in its case. Sometimes I realise that I need to check something else and try to wake the phone (literally a second or two after locking) and nothing happens. This is mostly after hanging up a VoIP call.

Never tried the three finger approach either. Is this not the way to put the phone into some sort of debug mode in preparation for loading new ROMs?

what voip client do you guys use ? cuz i got not porblems using skype.
maybe somethings wrong with your voip app.
anyways the 3 finger thingy wont take you directly into the debug mode ,it will warn you first and you can simply cancel it before it reaches the debug mode

In my case, whenever I turn on 'Easy Battery Saver' and it become to sleep in the night...
But I know it is working because I can hear vibration and sound if i push the volume buttons.

anyway,,, I love easy battery saver but dont want my phone to sleep everynight :-(...

I am using csipsimple to access my sipgate account. It works just fine most of the time but seems to be a common factor in my sleep of death issues. Skype works all the time (other than the normal force closes).

I don't use VoIP but still getting this issue, occasionally. I have done a factory reset & it has made no difference.

Will try the three button power up next time as previously I have removed the battery to re-start.

I guess I am not alone after all. And thanks for identifying the problem touringhaggis.

I think it is due to some application, may be Easy Battery Saver but hard to pin-point.

So is there any workaround / correction for this "Sleep of Death" problem ?

I factory reset mine because I was so sick of it happening nearly every day. That was over a week ago and it hasn't happened since. I reinstalled all the same apps and it's been fine so far.

Ok this just happened to me and I totally thought my phone had died. Did not respond to power button or the 3 button hold. I also tried to charge it to get s reason but the screen stayed the same. I plugged it into my computer then it finally started. I have only had my phone 6 days. Im worried about this issue. Im glad I have this forum to help me from freaking out. I was on my way to return my phone! So next time I will just remove battery like you folks did. What a bummer!
I was only using navigation then my phone blanked out. My battery was at 50%.

If I factory reset then id lose all my settings right? That would be a lot of work to re enter. I'll definitely keep my eye on this thread.
