Samsung Galaxy S III vs. iOS 6

The new OS from Apple with be like anything else that comes from them. Crap that has just enough hype and marketing glitz to impress Justin Bieber fans. How or why anyone would pay 2/3 more for a device for less features is just silly. I just got a new IBM laptop for dev work that walks circles around any crap book AND it was about $1200 cheaper! Apart from my rant... From the videos and reviews that I have seen for the S3, I think that you will be showing off your's to your jealous isheep friends long after the iOS6 release.

I would think, at least for the short future, any new iPhone will be its best selling device, no matter what it has. The stock dropped both times because innovation isn't there, and that IS something to worry about. At this point, the iPhone is a status symbol, and the next few iterations are guaranteed to outsell the previous ones. If they continue this path of litigation and failure to innovate, that might change in a few years.

I agree, and that's mostly what I was trying to infer in my post. The iP5 will sell very well, despite everything. I just don't share your optimism over the iP6 or iP5S or whatever next years model gets called (maybe "The new iPhone"?). Not that I think the iP6 would fail completely, I just think it will be the first one to not have outsold it's predecessor if they continue their current path of making relatively small changes without the major changes/additions.

Please tone down the "iCrap" and "iSheep" rhetoric, please. We have plenty of Android fans that also use Mac Books and iPads. Each device has it's strength and weaknesses that vary for every person.

This is what worries me - as a new (about to be) switcher. Will iOS 6 and iPhone 5 make me regret my decision. The more I find out about s3 and android the less I think it will. Even people with s2s don't need to worry I think...

The s3 looks like an amazing phone which is why I preordered one. I may also get the new iPhone because I like tech but as it stands now ill be happy with my s3.

To be fair, you could do all these things already on the iphone as well, with 3rd party apps. These features just weren't "baked" into the OS, other than Siri (well on the 4S anyway. Not that iOS is fragmented or anything) and maybe texting while talking. The only iphones that couldn't transmit data and talk at the same time were CDMA versions like Verizon's. Has that changed somehow?

And it's been a little while since I used an iphone, much less a non-jailbroken one, so maybe I'm mistaken? Stock iOS sucks big time. I don't know how people can stand it?

I was referring to texting when you receive a call, instead of answering or simply declining. You can select "call you back later" or whatever. It was never a feature of iOS but had been a feature of Android for awhile. And to be fair, this thread is iOS VS Android, not 3rd party apps vs 3rd party apps.

Ok...I'm going to do something that is relatively rare for me. Let's bring this back on track with comparing what was announced with iOS6 vs what we have with the GS3.

Personally, I'm anxious to see how well SmartStay works for me. As well as the floating video window feature (I forgot the name). Also all of the gestures. I think that's the king point for me, is that it will be more gesture operated. The tap to scroll seems to be the most useful of the list, because I'm often reading webpages, forums, etc on my device. iOS's features seem kinda meh to that. (Seriously, Safari wasn't able to upload pictures before iOS6?)

It's a let down and still ios has been stale for 2yrs now. Honestly the SG3 is just a hold over device for me until windows phone catches up and releases some good ones on Verizon which is said to be happening later this year. Android is nice but just does not have that wow factor that iOS or WP7 has. iOS is just old to me now after 5yrs, but if I was new tO this game I would probably pick it.

WP7 is really polished and just needs some phones and the app store to follow it to make it dominate.

The only thing that was impressive with was the next gen macbook pro (hardware and specs alone).

IOS 6 was nothing new. Apple has simply been adding features that they've been lacking for years since 2007. Google has had these features for a very long time. People get caught up in the hype as if they did it first. Everything about Apple seems programmed. They might simply change or alter the way something is done, but at the end of the day it was already done. The only thing Apple has greatly improved on was Siri. Yea, Android has had something like that before, but Siri is way more sophisticated. I can't wait until Google improves on their own in that area. In order for Apple to innovate for real is to overhaul. They really need to change the way they do things and take a chance. A bunch of panels with apps on them will not work. Their OS needs to come alive.

The only thing Google needs to do is add more quality and pleasure in their ecosystem. Fragmentation kills Android in the long run. It's one thing to be open but you will never have success if it continues to run the way it does.

The bgr article is trash.

Apple maps vs Google Maps for Central London

Enough said.
They will get it right, eventually... but they will spend a small fortune and lots of time doing so.

Far as the next iphone goes it'll all be about how it looks, big deal.. I can honestly say the appearance of apple products doesn't stand out to me. Look at a galaxy tab vs an ipad - I honestly don't see much difference style wise.

I have a sneaking suspicion there will be an iOS6.1 with iphone 5 only features when it gets launched..

Massively underwhelming. I have an iPad and I'm really disappointed. Most of the new features are already available on Android and have been for some time: -

1. Launch apps with voice.
2. Turn by turn navigation.
3. Call reject with message.
4. Facebook integration.
5. Attach files from email compose screen (still only pics and vids in ios 6)
6. Install apps in store without it minimising the store each time.

Some of the features will be nice to have for sure, but there's nothing exciting.

Also, what's with dropping support for the iPad (a laptop competitor) after two years when they support a three year old phone?!

Nothing was really special about iOS 6. I guess people expected more innovated features. But, Galaxy s3 is a whole new DEVICE.

Doubtful. Android still can't properly sync with your cars stereo and steering wheel controls.

And the only thing I saw that "may" be comparable to Android was turn by turn nav and 3d mapping. That said, Apple will forever be dependent on TomTom now. We'll see how good Apple's turn by turn nav is when it comes out.

And I don't care if iphone 5 or the "new iphone" or whatever it will be called is dipped in gold. You'll have to pry the Galaxy S3 from my cold, rotting, dead hands, before I get the iphone.

Guess it depends on the device. Our Motorola MAXX's do just fine with our Ford Fusion Sync systems - skips back and forth in the music player, choosing media when in the player will cycle between the favorites and mp3's, etc. this kind of info is why I'm reading in this area as I am debating doing a line with the S3 before 06/28 on Verizon.

I hate to be a hater, but with iOS6, and no support for the original iPad, IOS IS NOW FRAGMENTED. Sorry, I don't really mind apple that much, but that really makes me laugh now. Guess they cannot use the android fragmentation argument as much now. Ya, ya, android is still "more" fragmented, but still, gives me the ability to say, "shut up, so is iOS!".

Trust me, iOS was fragmented before this. I did some coding for some jailbreak mods and you had different file naming conventions for the ipad, non-retina displays (3g and 3gs) and retina displays (ip4 and 4s). I don't know what the new ipad uses do diffentiate itself? So if you wanted to make a tweak for all iOS devices and you wanted to display a background or image, for a winterboard mod lets say, you had triple the work. It was a PIA, which is why many tweaks are for "retina" only iphones. So anyone that says iOS is or wasn't fragmented, well that was true... In 2007.

IOS isn't as bad as Android, but starting with ICS isn't this supposed to change? No more coding for individual Android devices, as long as the device meets min specs?

Holy sh#tballs Batman. Awesome find! I had no idea this phone could do that much via UsB. I can not wait for my S3 to get here.

And there are BT stacks with iOS, but I think you have to be jailbroken. I know I can play SNES games with a Wii controller on my ipad, but this blows that away.

Again, thanks for the info. :D

My thoughts exactly! Can't wait to get this phone!

Can set a song as an alarm? Funny, I did that on my G1
Turn by turn navigation? Wait, I did that on my shitty Moto Cliq
Can decline a call and reply with a text? I never really cared to do that, but I know I can do it on my One S today and not wait for "this Fall".

I don't think the S3 has much to worry about, there was really no "WOW" factor in iOS 6's presentation.
