Well, enjoy your 2.2 while the rest of us move onto gingerbread :D

most of the non geeky users of SGS are not at all able to update to 2.2 via kies...it has to be OTA like HTC and yeah HTC Sense UI not the touchviz buddy

and yeah gingerbread is sure comming to DHD :)

so after all this months using SGS, I have to say for non geeky guys samsung and its kies is crap...bye bye samsung :)

Unfortunately, regular people do no want to hack 27k their phone.

It is a shame samsung could not release a good firmware properly. Many of us use 3rd party firmware that fixes the lag and gps problem to a certain extent. Unfortunately, you need a lot of reading and understanding before venturing into it.

On the other hand, rooting is extremely easy.
  1. Go to this link to download the apk file. Scroll down till you found attached file - z4root.1.3.0.apk
  2. Connect your usb cable and transfer it to your phone.
  3. Open "My Files" or similar programs, click on the z4root apk and it will prompt you to install.

After this, rooting and unrooting will be like flipping the light switch.

After rooting, backup all user app using TB

Hmm...sounds good..i guess i have to root...in that case, i might as well go to market and dwlnd z4 root..root ma phone and apply OCLF..hopefully that shud solve the lag..right??

I checked, ryanza's z4root and OCLF are no longer in the market. So just dl his app from the thread he started.

OCLF is not a true solution. But hey, if it works for you, it's good right?

Thanks a lot bud!!...really helpful :)...just one more doubt..if i did backup my apps thru TB..then do a factory reset...wudnt that delete Tb as well??i mean logically factory reset deletes everything!!..so then i wud end up loosing apps..contacts..msgs..etc etc etc

It may delete TB, I am not sure. You can always redownload it from market. All of your backups will not be removed after factory reset. They are stored in a folder called TitaniumBackup.

You might want to download SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel from Market to backup your sms to gmail. Also, not sure if factory reset will delete your sms. But better to be safe than sorry.

I sync my contacts to google. Alternatively, you can use kies to backup your contacts.

I upgraded my phone through Kies. It went off well with out any problem. All my applications contacts and media are all there. My question is after upgrading should I have to do factory reset? A
Thanks

was wondering i shoul dgo for 2.2.1 when it comes or wait for Xda smarties 2.3 rom.

OCLF has plenty of bugs and has been known to cause all sort of issues. It's just easier to apply. That's all. Voodoo and Universal Lagfix are better. Just have to remember to remove them before flashing a new rom.

Titanium backup is a free app, but some of the more advanced options are limited to paid users only. The main difference is when you try to restore the apps - free users have to go through the normal app install process (i.e. click okay to every single app you want to restore), while paid users don't. I bought the license back when it was still on paypal.

2.2.1. is fast. Damn fast. Fast enough to give you a quadrant score of over 1500 without any lagfix. (Mind you, I still applied voodoo lagfix just for the heck of it.)

Yes, do a factory reset if you find it slow. You'll lose your applications and contacts (actually everything other than pictures, music, videos, etc). You can upload your backed up contacts thereafter.

Dear snapper your replies were also snappier...lol

so you suggest voodoo and universal lag fix, which one is better for SGS froyo, which one you suggest. can you suggest the links if you dont mind

i am currently getting 1900-2050 quadrant score.

how can we get the 2.2.1 official rom. are you using official rom or custom 2.2.1

cheers

Hi all,

Thanks for a very informative thread. I had my eyes on the SGS for some time now, and this thread really convinced me to invest in the device.

Now the issue: Where do I get it in Mumbai?? Checked with a lot of retailers but surprisingly it seems to be out of stock everywhere. Any leads and indicative prices will be greatly welcome :)

Cheers!

Well, I bought my Galaxy S last saturday for 28K in Malad West. Available in Chroma store for 28.5K or so. Don't think SGS is out of stock it's Wave which is out of stock most of the times.

Guys,
did anybody manage to work around the the email notification problem on the stock email app? notifications on gmail is perfectly fine, however anything else i configure(ie., hotmail or corporate) dont give notifications (neither the status bar nor the ringtone)

not to mention, the social hub or the "accounts and sync> add account" menu doesnt even have an option to configure mails besides facebook, gmail and twitter! did anybody figure out a way around this?

any help would appreciated.

Nope..the social hub provides you to configure any one email that you would like to keep as default one in your phone...it does not specifically provide you with gmail. I have configured hotmail as my social hub email..

I don't understand your question, but is it related to support for regional languages?

In that case sadly, android doesn't support them. Take a look at this,
Issue 3029 - android - support for Indian Regional Languages..... - Project Hosting on Google Code

You can star/comment there, gl.

Hi Narayanan...what I meant was I'm not able to read Malayalam news papers in my Galaxy S. I think android does not support Indian languages, thats what I could understand from your link...thanx
