Samsung Galaxy S3 General Information and Troubleshooting FAQ

Please forgive if this has been covered. I bought an 11 pin adapter to connect to hdmi using older cable. It connects to the tv fine for pictures and video on phone, but while connected the phones data connection is turned off (can't play YouTube, Pandora, etc). I bought the cable because I don't have internet at the house. Is there a way around this? Thank you.

Go Locker is also a good alternative to the lockscreen.

There may be some widgets that are just a calendar 1x1 calendar widget. I can search the play store in a little bit.

I think this is a problem with using non-Samsung adaptor. It happens to me, too.
 
When I am charging my phone the screen timeout feature doesn't work. This has just recently started happening the last couple weeks. I charge my phone at night and so when I get the notification that it is fully charged (or any other notification) the screen stays on until I wake up and turn it off. I usually don't wake up to the notifications, so I think my screen is sometimes on for hours at a time. Anyone know how to fix this?

Check settings > Developer Options > Uncheck everything

I can't find it on my device, but on Android devices, this is typically due to an option in Developer options being on.
 
very much a newbie so take pity on me. Have the S3 but having trouble with calender and ring tone. Friends are telling me that my phone rings 8-10 times then they hang up mean while at my end my phone is not making any noise. The ringer is turned on and the volume is turned up. Also I put some things in my calender not want to delete them. Can not figure out how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

For your ringer volume issue, are you seeing your incoming call on the screen? Actually seeing the incoming call. I ask because my sister was calling me last week and I ignored it to call her back in a bit, but the phone had automatically added her number to the Reject List because of this. I only figured it out when she said she was calling and I wasn't seeing anything, so check your reject list (Phone > Call Settings > Call Rejection > Auto reject list). Just check that in case.

For your calendar question I don't understand what you're asking.
 
Every now and again my GMail up and crashes on me. Not sure what this is about.. tried searching ze web and a lot of people said to clear caches or clear data but this doesn't seem to work.

My adapter is genuine Samsung but the cable is not. Do you think a genuine cable will fix this? Tha inks again.
 
I downloaded a picture someone e-mailed to me a week ago. In my notification bar it stills says downloading. I tried long press and swipe to remove it. Restart doesn't help.

First check out what brownitus is saying. If not, then attempt to play any sort of MP3 through your speaker. Does any sound work?

Try resetting the data on GMail. Open your app drawer, drag the GMail app to App Info. Clear data.

Possibly, but I don't hold high hope of it. I had problems with this with genuine Sammy cables.

I cleared data and cache and reset. Still there. I will keep looking for a fix. Thank you
 
Hi. I got my S3 yesterday. First, I've read different things about battery life. Today was a moderate usage day of talk and data. With Wi-Fi on, GPS on, a fair amount of texting and email/FB receiving/sending, I am at 17 hours 44 minutes off charger, with 42% battery remaining. I would say that's a definite WIN for me.

I have two questions.

On my old EVO, I would get a system update notification that I would most times cancel and then not see the notification again for a week or so. On my S3, I have to cancel the notification about every 15 minutes or so. That's annoying. Any way to change that or set the delay for prompting for a longer duration?

Also, I'm currently on v 4.0.4. I've read about updates that Samsung is sending that disables parts of Google Search to find local things on your phone. I think I have that functionality now. If I accept the latest Samsung update, will I lose that feature or is this something entirely different? Is there a way to give you more specific info to determine my exact build and whether Samsung has already dumbed down my phone?

Lastly, when I press a button on my phone and the screen comes on, I see the unlock screen. There are four icons on the bottom, the phone icon, the mail icon, an icon of a big black S, and a camera icon. None of these work because I have to swipe to unlock. But when I unlock, I get a totally different screen and those icons no long appear. Am I missing something?

Ok, try it with the app called "Downloads". It's got to be one of these apps that are doing it.

It means your notifications are disabled. The options to re-enable should be on your notification bar.

Unless you root, you can't disable the message. But you can get it to stop for awhile. Go to System > App Management > All tab > FWUpgrade and force stop it.

Second, the universal search does get 'dumbed down' to not be able to search your device. However, I never used it before I knew it was going to get dumbed down (and had to check to see if I actually had it). Also, you can get a universal-search enabled Google Search APK from XDA (I can provide a link if you want) and install it and restore universal search. Even without root, this works. Or just wait until Jelly Bean and Google Now is delivered, which will make you forget about the old search app all together.

Those icons have to be swiped up. Tap/hold the app, move it up, release. The screen will unlock and that app will be launched. Or just disable the shortcut apps all together in the Settings > Security > Lockscreen options

It is neither. I use the GMail app day in and day out. It never (if only rarely) crashes. Something may be wrong with your device. Have you attempted a factory reset? This clears out all your settings/contacts/etc if you don't have them sync'd or backed up.
 
Hi, I am facing 2 issues with my S3
1) In india, there is only on Time Zone, but Whenever I am roaming within India in multiple states, my S3 shows 2 different Time zones, one for Home Location and other for Roaming Location. But its an issue since I have not moved to any other country.. and in India there is only one Time Zone.
I checked in Settings -> Date and Time -> My Country is INdia but still the Device shows two different Timings on the home screen

2) Can not set clicked picture as Wallpaper in Horizontal Mode. If i browse Gallery using default Gallery and try to set clicked picture as Wallpaper in horizontal Mode, the Crop function does not allow to set the Wallpaper in Horizontal mode, so that it should be set for Multiple Home screens


Can someone suggest ?

You can turn off the roaming clock in Settings > Security > Lockscreen options. It's near the bottom.

The second issue is because Touchwiz doesn't allow for horizontal wallpapers. It can't be done unless you use Nova, Apex, or another launcher.
 
Thank you again for all the help but it still didn't disappear. I found the file in the downloads app and deleted it. I tried reset and battery pull after deleting it.

It's to signify notifications are off. When you pull down the bar at the top of the screen (not sure what you actually call it!) you can select notifications to be on or off.

Ok, so there are two options.

One: Keep resetting apps that you think may have caused it. Like the browser you used to download the file, etc.

Two: If it still doesn't go away, you may have to factory reset the device. It won't delete local files, but it will remove contacts not synced with google, apps, etc. But it will reset whatever is doing that notification. A little extreme, but it works.
 
Hi everybody. I have an S3 for a month now and I accidentally deleted the Contacts icon from the quick access menu. Since I knew how to put icons back there, I opened the app drawer but can't find the same Contacts icon. The only way I can get to my contacts is by tapping Phone > Contacts. I'm at my wits end and have troubleshot for nearly a day.

My last resort would be to reset the device but before I do this, any recommendations?

Btw, I can still see Contacts when I go to Settings > Application Manager > All

If anyone figures this out let me now, my voice search icon disappeared too.
 
I have been facing problems transfering apps to sd card if any1 can help me doing it as my 16gb is full and i want to add more apps.
 
I have a strange problem with slow keypad/dialing response when I'm entering in a number in response to a voice prompt. For example, I make a call, then when prompted to enter a number (like a passcode for a conference call), it takes 2-3 seconds before the phone responds from one key press to the next. It only happens after I've already placed a call. The problem is random, but it has been happening for as long as I've had the phone (VZW preorder). Anyone ever have this issue and know of a fix? Thanks.
