samsung intercept question from a newbie.

hey guys, i am buying my very first android phone in a few days. i am buying the samsung intercept on virgin mobiles network. at the moment, all VM intercepts are stuck on 2.1. i heard that sprint released an update so that sprint users can now enjoy 2.2 froyo. is this update going to be issued to VM users too? this is something that will make or break my purchase.

You would have to contact the carrier and ask. They are the ones that have the update, and need to do their thing to finish it and send it out. Unfortunately, Virgin isnt known for getting updates out very quickly.

thanks for the info. you say virgin mobile isnt very fast at releasing updates? in the past how much longer has it usually taken for virgin mobile to release updates after sprint?

I heard it's not VM's choice, becaue somehow they actually are Sprint (they are run on the Sprint network), and that somehow it was the android developer's choice? Probably a bunch of crap, but....

I don't think they're going to release it at all.

You can put the Sprint Froyo (2.2) on your phone and then just remove Sprint apps. But it takes being computer savvy. I did it to my phone though, and it runs a lot faster. Still a solid phone without the update though.

If this is your first android phone, (it was mine also) I think it's a great choice regardless of 2.1 or 2.2. And you can't beat the service plan prices.
Just my opinion.

Sprint owns Virgin Mobile. I haven't seem any post or announcement from VM stating that the Intercept would not be getting 2.2.

i just want to take the time to thank you all for the help. its nice to know that there is a community out there for helping me out with things like this. thanks again, guys. i will definitely come here again if i need any android help.

I personally prefer to wait for VM Android 2.2 release on Samsung Intercept.

According to Virgin Mobile USA Twitter account, Samsung Intercept should receive Android 2.2 (Froyo) upgrade around 3/25/2011.

The actual Virgin Mobile USA Twitter account text is as :

"We know you have been asking for specifics on when VM will be getting the update to Android Froyo 2.2….it will be available about 3/25."
