Samsung Note 4 release timing Fail?

Another thing many people are forgetting is that phones don't get to their destinations by magic. They have to be shipped there, and often that means... literally... on a ship. Apple has swamped the shipping channels with the iPhone, for weeks, pretty much.

If Shipping iPhones is more profitable, then Samsung has to push their release date back. The later release date of the Note 4 may be through not fault of their own, to be honest.

I think they rather release a fully baked product than put a buggy phone on the market and hope they can get enough FW updates out to dissatisfied users before the device becomes a pariah in the market? Just cause they wanted to get the jump on Apple. That can hurt much more than releasing two weeks before an iPhone.

I think Samsung's intention to announce the Note 4 and Edge before the iPhone 6 announcement was to get it in people's heads that these phones were around the corner. I am pretty sure Samsung knew the iPhone 6 was going to come out first. I believe in just about every iPhone announcement - the phone came out like within 1-2 weeks of announcement. Samsung weren't going to be able to push their phones out before that so I think the announcement was just bring it up. I think they'll be fine. I know I'm picking one (or both) up. :)

Apple's Law Suits never stopped Samsung from releasing/launching phones, so I doubt the NVidia lawsuit would change that. They should be used to operating in that type of environment by now...

Apple doesn't need to release in all places at once because they're pretty confident that their users will ignore competing devices to wait for theirs, and that assumption has played in their favor for years now. Why should they think otherwise now? Their sales of iPhones has never dropped or even stagnated, yet, and it doesn't seem like this one will be the beginning of the end for then given the pre-order demand already putting the devices on back order for weeks.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that for Samsung. Remember they also have multiple chipsets; Qualcomm Snapdragon and Samsung Exynos, they still need to organise which region gets which chip and Modem, if Qualcomm are having supply issues it affects Samsung, they then need to reorganise.
For example, the S4 last year was meant to be like other releases: Exynos for International and Snapdragon for North America, then they ran it production difficulty with Exynos, they then made the I9505 with Snapdragon and it shipped to Europe and parts of Africa with LTE, while the Exynos (I9500) shipped to other parts of Europe, Africa and Asia without LTE, then there was the US Snapdragon variant with LTE, and finally the Exynos with LTE that sold only in S.Korea.

So many variables play into this, and Samsung like doing a bulk release on the same day/weekend, so if there is a major setback with one, it affects other variants to.

Also, Samsung got their fair share of good press, but I think the bloated up Galaxy S4 was the beginning of the end of that for then.

They absolutely turned a lot of people off with that phone despite its high sales, and the S5's disappointment is part of the result of that.

Beginning of the end? how very dramatic. :D

Nothing wrong with the Galaxy S4, definitely not put off as it's a solid device.

it's true they should move away from releasing 16GB versions as for many this is very limiting regardless of the so called bloat.

Actually much high value tech products are shipped by air cargo, really because container ships are too slow. Something like 6-8 weeks from China to Europe, maybe the same from China to the US West Coast across the Pacific, which would mean they'd have to air freight or truck it all across countries and continents anyway, for places that are well away from the sea ports, like the Foxconn plants in Zhengzhou, Chengdu and Wuhan.

To me a phablet is more than a huge phone. I have a DNA with 5" screen and don't consider it the same thing as a phablet (Note). I put the iPhone with phones. Should there be a reason to think otherwise?

EDIT: Just noticed in a news blurb that the iPhone Plus is sold out but won't ship for another four weeks. So technically most that want a Note will have it in hand before the Plus "owners".

Maybe your right. Secretly I hope the local store near me has a long line and will be sold out of 6+ next Friday, otherwise I'll be the new owner of the 6+. I picked up my wifes new phone yesterday and the mgr there told me they are one of the slowest stores in the area (to me their location is terrible, hidden, in the back of an empty strip mall). They said last years launch only 5 people were in line waiting for them to open for the iphone, they got 15 units out of the 5000 in their district, this year their district is getting 30000 units. I'm probably going to leave it up to fate on whether I get the 6+ or the Note 4, I'll go next Friday, if I end up with one great, if not I'm waiting for Note 4. I wish Note 4 was out now though.

Not gonna argue, basically:

Beginning of the end with the media's love affair with them. Now, the tech press is eager to push Motorola and HTC phones over Galaxy S4 phones. That was unheard of back before the Galaxy S4, but the state in which that phone arrived changed media perception and they jumped on the HTC and Motorola Bandwagon and never looked back.

The phone was bloated up like no other. The battery life was dubious at best, and the built quality just wasn't that great.

Friend of mine had one, the battery life he constantly complains about and if he sits down with it in his front pocket it power cycles (not on the phone, just in that pocket) he's asking me why I didn't tell him to get an HTC One, now?

He got it before I upgraded, and ended up getting an S3 instead of the 4 while I waited for the Note 3.

Press after the S4's release was not that favorable and the press really pushed the HTC One despite its terrible camera and smaller screen because the software and built quality was so much better than Samsung.

So yea, it was the beginning of the end of the tech press love affair with Samsung.

They were lucky they got as much as they did, seeing as how the Galaxy S (1) was probably the worse flagship ever launched in the history of this industry and that would have doomed most any company if they launched a phone that terrible.

Also the problem isn't just space. I don't know anyone that seriously thinks an S4 performs as well as an HTC One or Sony/Motorola device (even those with Snapdragon Pro SoCs) in real world use.

The phone performs like it's a year older with the software Samsung put on it. It's way too heavy and does nothing but perpetuate the myth that Android needs to run on a super computer to run well.

Have access to the Droid Maxx, S4, Note 3 and M8. The S4 lags and stutter, and takes longer to load apps, etc. Than the Droid Maxx which is speced lower than it, consisterly and all the time.

Question is will someone who sees how that phone performs compared to devices with even worse hardware bother getting it's upgrade? For a lot of people, that wasn't the case.

Of course, the tech press never missing an opportunity to bash TouchWiz, so just a cursory Google will give practically any other manufacturer a mind share advantage there...

There are many android phones to choose from, not just the Note 4. iPhone users have just one phone to get. So Apple will always get more hype than any android phone.

Unheard of? all of the Galaxy devices come with touchwiz and various Samsung applications, that's obviously been increasing slightly after every major product update but to call it "unheard of" is ridiculous. You need to get a grip.

Motorola have only recently made a comeback outside the US and their success is due to their pricing which nobody else can really match, well for the Moto G anyway.

HTC has been popular with media(technology) sites, that's nothing new, it's certainly not something that's recently happened.

Okay, you have no idea what your talking about.

I have used all the Galaxy S devices and upgraded from the Galaxy S3 to a Galaxy S4 and it was one of the better upgrades I've done for many reasons. Battery life being one of them, it was definitely an improvement compared to the Galaxy S3, 4 hours screen time on a normal day for me which I definitely didn't get with the Galaxy S3.

I think your friend is very unfortunate if your the one giving him advice.

Galaxy S4 received bad press with regards to limited storage made worse by the increased "bloat" The build quality was fine, Samsung has been bashed since the Galaxy S about the use of plastic, it's been that way for years.

I have a 32gb S4. Besides the well known heat when using gps and in a weak signal area at same time, been great.

S5 sales were hurt due to no 32gb option. First Android device Verizon friends recall where a lack of a 32gb option appears to have had noticeable impact.

The X was called the best Android phone in the world by tech blogs. Almost excessively in some attempt to push it. Blogs did the same with the One and many bashed the S4 in comparison to them.

The software in the S4 is not well optimized. The device does lag quite a bit and battery life is not that great, not the one I'm around all the time.

HTC was getting bashed before the One X. People complained that sense got too bloated and they complained about terrible battery life (tiny batteries) and cramps cameras in their phones, as well as lack of storage.

Remember the galaxy S released with 16GB back when many HTC phones had 8 or less.

Also, back then Samsung was viewed as more open to the developer community.

As they got more successful and started adding more bloat and pushing into the enterprise, the sentiment changed completely.

I told him to get the S4. Yes. He was unfortunate that I gave him that advice. I agree with you.

This point gets lost in the hype of the idevices. Android phones and tabs are the most prevalant OS on the planet, for a reason. Just because one phone out of many to choose from doesn't have the overall sales of an idevice in which there is basically ONE phone to choose from yearly, that is not an apples to apples (hah) comparison. Again, android is the worlds most prevalant OS, period. There are literally hundreds of android devices to choose from for the android user.

It's not very popular outside the US, priced the same as the Nexus 5 it's not selling very well regardless of what some random blog says, even in the US it was never selling as well as other flagship devices.

The software in the S4 is not well optimized. The device does lag quite a bit and battery life is not that great, not the one I'm around all the time.

The original software was bit laggy, that was fixed a long time ago, there is no lag with current firmwares.

HTC was getting bashed before the One X. People complained that sense got too bloated and they complained about terrible battery life (tiny batteries) and cramps cameras in their phones, as well as lack of storage.

Yes, that particular version of sense was a memory hog but you would be surprised how many stuck with HTC and defended them.

I told him to get the S4. Yes. He was unfortunate that I gave him that advice. I agree with you.

You should have told him to get a replacement or at the very least check if there was anything obvious he installed causing the memory drain, letting a friend return to a Galaxy S3 which was a pretty awful device in retrospect is not what friends do. Certainly not a story I would choose to share online given the facts about both devices.

Which is why I'm sure you made that up... :)

Also the size the device was a put off, it's quite a bit larger than a Galaxy S4 with larger bezels and with only small display increase. Also the design is not the greatest, they actually made it look a little worse.

With the release of the HTC One I think there were higher expectations for them to lose at least some of the plastic, at least the Note 4 and Alpha appear to be addressing that.

Which is a shame because when you look under the hood it's a great device.

That though is based on back orders created due to millions of preorders. That means most in preorders will still get theirs weeks before the Note 4 and then back orders get theirs later.

That seems a misleading article as a result. Samsung probably wishes they would be in backorder mode too. Not seeing it though due to the G3 and iPhone.

I wonder if Verizon made a mistake with the list of the 5.5". They show full retail for the 128gb model as $750 yesterday. No way.

As far as sales numbers - wouldn't worldwide be the true measure?? Any numbers on how Samsung fared worldwide compared to the last iphone? You have to consider samsung has several devices for sale, so one would need to include all of them (I'm talking phones, not tabs). Also, you have to consider that Samsung is just one of many android devices to buy/use. So having a true feel for fail or not fail would have to take those differences into consideration IMHO. I doubt Samsung is going to be hurting overall, but sheer US numbers I'm sure apple will sell more new iphones than the N4.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt the single most irritating fact that I observe 24/7 - 365 is Apple's advantage in the mainstream press, and across the blogosphere.

Pro-Apple articles are so pervasive it's sickening. Yet that said I do know exactly how this was created. Steve Jobs true skills were in sales and marketing, although he convincingly took credit for everything. Having personally followed Apple since it's beginning, Jobs worked cleverly and diligently to build Pro-Apple relations with tech writers at influential newspapers like the San Jose Mercury News, SF Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, New York Times et al.

Then as the Internet rose into prominence he repeated that same accomplishment. As a result Apple is treated as royalty and Android is the bastard stepchild. Yet Google is certainly not without its faults, as they have plenty of resources to address the situation. Why they fail to do so is equally frustrating and quite puzzling.

Without fail, even articles posted within Google News, are critical of the Android platform, any new products or future concepts. It simply never ceases to amaze me. Most have heard the expression "competing on a level playing field". When it comes to Android vs iOS things could not be more lopsided.

I thoroughly enjoy a good discussion of one product vs another, to have that kind of intelligent exchange when it comes to these two platforms, is all but impossible in many quarters. One exception is this forum, which I'm happy to report is mostly fair, open and populated by intelligent logical right minded enthusiasts.

Make no mistake, I recognize and appreciate what Apple has accomplished. I've been a regular customer for many years, enjoying their computers. It's their culture, arrogance and conduct that I could do without... :)

I think the 5.5" iPhone with micro sd and Android L would be near perfection (needs replaceable battery for that).

128gb model as well :) I would "tolerate" the 64gb model though ;)

I have a some feeling though the S6 could be impressive (out of absolute need), but that would be spring next year. 5.3", 32GB/64GB and 64bit CPU seems a chance.

If Samsung releases a 16GB model with Android L for a premium device next year, they might be clueless. That sub 11GB of storage turns into sub 9GB with L.

Added:

Samsung needs to get some test units out ASAP in order to start building more buzz to offset the iPhone 5.5". Nice contrast to the iPhone if out in the field with the media now. Thing is the N4 is probably not even out of test firmware so they probably can't as a result. Would not be surprised to not see test units out until the first week of October.

BTW, the media is already acting like the 1080p display and 5.5" is a revelation to technology. I do prefer 1080p for resource reasons on a small display, but the media seems to have no shame.
