Help Samsung S3 problems after 4.3 update

Lurker
So, once again a Samsung S3 which refuses to work after the new update (4.3).

Battery usually lasts a couple of hours (shuts down at 40%, which it reaches in record speed as well), won't connect to home network (others are ok), lots of other tiny stuff like the phone being slow when I want to get it out of sleep mode.

I've done my research, I think, and have done the following:

-Factory reset (3x I think)
-unchecked: scanning always available, auto network & Wifi power save mode (within the *#0011# mode).

This has helped to at least stay connected to the backup network, but no luck for my own yet. I'm stealing the backup one from a neighbour, as does everybody else, so it's definitely not preferable. The battery life seems to have improved, however.

I have been trying to install a Android 4.4 ROM through this website. I have done everything as stated in this video. Unfortunately, at the step on 2:20 in the video, my phone downloads the file then says: An error occurred while flashing your recovery.

I'm a complete and utter noob, so please bear with me!

Cool so how far have you got mate? Is the phone rooted? Im not really a fan of video guides but did you use Odin to flash CF-Root?

Ah so a root is necessary? I was wondering about that. You don't happen to have a really good guide, do you? *googles in the meantime*

Ok so I rooted my phone as explained in the post. Thanks :) If you don't recommend the app I was using before, have you got another method by any chance?

If you used the CF method then you should already have clockworkmod recovery (CWM) installed so no need for rom manager.
Check by turning off and holding in power, home and volume up.
First thing to do is make a backup of the whole phone in CWM in case anything goes wrong

Just did! Thanks :)

I might have spoken a bit prematurely, however. Seems it takes hoooours (about 8 I think?) now to get to 50% or so, but then it's suddenly off, battery's all empty. I used it half an hour ago and it was definitely not anywhere near dying then...

It could just need a couple of full charge cycles to calibrate mate since its a new kernel. ART should improve battery life as well as speed things up

My battery was dying quickly after putting on 4.3, but after a couple of days, it seemed to learn how I was using the phone, and I am quite happy with charge life---better than on 4.1. It helps a bit that I have a 3800 mAh battery in it,lol.
