You really want to give Samsung ONE MORE CHANCE?? They lied to Behold 2 owners about an update! Then they turn around and lie about it not being upgradeable past 1.6! and you want me to give them ONE MORE CHANCE?? thats 2 strikes! and to make a 3rd They TRIED to hide the fact that they PROMISED 2.0 by removing the video from youtube! why should anyone give them another chance when they just struck out? what do we have to believe that this won't happen again?? it will supposedly ship with 2.1? then what? wait till gingerbread and hazelnut arrives to get froyo?

On principle, yes I care if Samsung upgrade the device. No one wants to see false promises..... but in reality, I don't really care as I don't keep my phones that long enough to worry about one OS to another.

Besides, if Samsung really want this phone to be seen as a killer, then they simply have to sell it with whatever is the latest OS.
Advertising the best phone with out of date software does not go together.
My opinion, once Froyo hits the streets the i9000 will get it, otherwise buyers will not take the phone serious enough. :)
 
My advice is buy it if you think its a good enough phone now, without an upgrade to 2.2, otherwise think twice and maybe go for something else. If you purchase in the hopes of the upgrade, and it doesn't materialise, you'll be just like the disgruntled X10 owners who purchased the phone with some fiction in their heads drawn from hopeful conjecture about future upgrades.

For me its worth it, the main 2.1 issues that would bother me are apps2SD and WiFi tether, but with a 2GB ROM and Samsung WiFi tether software included it seems good enough to me considering everything else its bringing to the table (especially considering how often I change phones, in three months or less I'll just buy whatever handset interests me, and it'll probably be a 2.2 handset anyway). Your mileage may vary.
 
I agree with NZtechfreak. I like the phone as-is. If it doesn't get any software updates, I'm OK with that.

Haha... I guessed I riled a few feathers. Well, you are entitled to your own opinion of course, I respect that. :) I bought the phone, not because of getting frequent updates, that won't work for me. I buy it because it just suits my present needs.

My sympathies to those who bought the Behold 2, perhaps they can collect enough users to petition to Samsung?

Time will tell if Samsung will update further beyond Froyo. Frankly, it is not that the phone will not work if the updates never happen? No?

Well, unless it stops receiving emails, or stops working with social networks, or stops working with the internet, I'm pretty sure I'll be OK. I'm pretty sure the hardware a year from now will make me wish for a new phone more than a software update.

Im also buying the phone for its impressive screen and specs, the 2.1 is more than enough for me.

Agreed i have been stuck on 1.6 since the G1 came out so 2.1 will still be all new too me lol.

Then theres:

Best Screen on a Mobile Phone.

DivX/XviD Playback.

Using the phone as a Wifi Hotspot.

Fast and Energy Efficient Processor.

720p 30FPS Video Recording.

Internal Storage and Card Slot.

FM Radio.

Video Call Camera.

DLNA.

Etc Etc
 
People who have been burned by Samsung phones before are going to understandably reluctant to try again, and it's great of you folks to point out the risks of going with them in the future. But for people who are impressed by the hardware on the Galaxy S or are able to swap phones quickly if Samsung doesn't come through, then it's their risk to take. I appreciate the info from everyone since I'm in the tough place of (a) love the specs on the phone but (b) I tend to keep phones for a long time, so I want it to either be decently well supported or not-too-difficult to root.
 
With Google I/O's insight on their Android development strategy, I won't be surprise if phones with the latest and greatest specs today will not meet android's minimum specs requirement in less than two years (maybe less). Those of us who always want the latest android version will find themselves upgrading their hand phones every two years.
 
the behold is not the only phone that samsung have not supported.

I had a Jet that was never ever officially updated .....i had to flash the rom with bootleg updates from forums, and it's still buggy as ever ....and now that they have officially given up on the phone, rather than releasing a new rom with either 'bada' or 'android' (yes, the hardware can support them, there is a group working on porting android), they have just more or less said they are no longer supporting the phone ....barely a year after it was released
 
^ not every single phone that a manufacturer releases is to be updated.. can you name one manufacturer who supports and updates all of its phones?

none right?

of course there are phones that would be left out in terms of updates and such..
let's get used to it, but on the behold 2 case, samsung should be ashamed..
 
To each his own. We can argue until the cow comes home, and still no one is gonna budge on their thoughts. Well, don't forget that early adopters of any new phone or gadgets for that matter, will also run into risks of having buggy devices! :D
 
i think the reason samsung didnt update those other phones is because there were very few users of it, maybe they decided that it is better spending their resources to developing newer phones and improve on the upcoming models, note that it is not that straightforward to update since samsung put another layer on top of android so that will cost some resources, in the end the cost/benefit just didn't add up..with the galaxy s, since it is their flagship phone and is being heavily promoted, i expect that they will update it because of a larger user base
 
Isn't Galaxy S a Google Experience phone ? (Because there's a Google logo in the back) here's the quote:

So doesn't that mean Galaxy S is "restricted" to recieve updates pushed by Google ? I really like the Desire but i want top of the line...

I just updated my firmware from i9000DXJE9 to i9000DXJF4, and that perhaps might be bug fixes or minor updates. Nevertheless, it is still an upgrade. :D

P/S: I got the phone on the last day of May, and here it is... an update, from the devil himself. :D

Yes... so if you decide to have this phone, my advise is to get the Astro file manager to backup your apps in the sd card, so that restoring could be a lot easier. :)

As to what improvement had been made, I am not sure... someone did claim it is smoother and faster, while one user said it had slowed down. Now all these comes with a lot of subjectivity... so take this with a pinch of salt.

Thats fine with me, actually I want everything wiped even the carrier customizations since ill be buying from a local telco but sim-free and from what I know they will be adding some junk into it. Hopefully they wont have any specific firmware changes and just applications.

Sad to say, Singtel bundled softwares (yes, they are useless to me too!) are still inside after the firmware upgrade. Factory reset does not do the trick too, and you can't uninstall them. The only way to get rid is to get it rooted, hopefully we can get it done over @xda-developers.
