Samsung Tab or Archos 70?

Both will be released soon and I am sure the Samsung will be twice the price of the Archos 70...

Both look like AWESOME devices but I need to decide which to get....
 
The Samsung tab will have more mainstream support and built-in access to the Android Market. The Archos tablet wiull be cheaper and will have a ready-made hack to add market support.
 
I think the Samsung's price will have a lot to do with it... If they get to crazy, they can keep it...
 
There is nothing Archos can do since their devices don't have gps and 3g hardware that Google stipulates devices must have in order to have the market officially. Google can't do anything if users want to put it on their device though...
 
im currently looking at both, and one of the things i noticed was the Achros has no GPS. Is it easy to pair a BT device with GPS and make it work?
Or since it has no "google", will i be stuck hacking it into working with Maps and such

There is Already a tested Market Hack for the Gen8 Archos tabs ... came out days after the first of the small models hit the street... it's a simple APK available for download off of the Archosfans forum... To me the big difference seems to be I can buy an Archos 101 + a Malata Tegra 2 10in. for price of a Galaxy tab unsubsidized and without contract so thats what I'm going to do and tether via my Droid1...

This is where I am leaning as well... I can hot spot it off my X and get 3g...

I assume the Tab will have an end cost of over $800 - $1000 (2 year data plan cost and Tab cost) whereas the Archos 70 will be $275...
 
Samsung is looking to release a wifi version later. (the complete opposite of what apple did) I don't see how a wifi version would be tied to a carrier. Samsung also said that it would be less than buying the 3g version. How much cheaper? Who knows.
 
how about tethering a GPS device to it? I know another thing to carry around but having a huge 10" screen and NOT having gps maps seems like a crime. I mean comeon, how much is a GPS receiver if I can buy a gps receiver + bluetooth transmitter + battery for 40$.
 
I wish either of these had phone for the US version... I would scratch my X and use it as an all in one... I rarely use phone functions and would gladly use a BT solution for phone usage...

Why does Europe get the cool version and the US get the limited version...

If the Tab had phone, I'd be all over it like a hobo on a ham sammich...
 
Maybe for the smaller varieties, I don't know how either the 101 or even the 70 really would benefit from having a GPS. Just seems like an added cost.

You can use wifi networks to determine locations. I think that is enough...
I don't think Archos is trying to go for the high end user, just trying to serve the value market techy niche.

I am sure samsung just threw gps in its galaxy tab in order to adhere to google's market requirements, which is smart because Google's market is really needed if you are going to mass market a device like that.

I've SIP over Wifi working using Gvoice and a $10/month Vonage SIP number so can be done... gave me something to do with my Second Moto Droid1 Dev/test phone :) Kind of handy as I can connect using the phone, netbook, or a tablet with bluetooth headset...
 
If you need GPS, 3G or are an app fan, avoid the Archos, since only about 200mb of device storage, so even with apps2sd, you will run out of space quickly.

If you are not an app fan and will install less than 50 apps (average) the Archos is the best option, since less than half the cost and has USB host function.
 
I'm all in with archos 70 or 101.

With the market hack and wifi hotspot I'm golden.

I spent some time looking at my smartphone/computer habits. I actually wrote them down. Listed everything from hourly things to monthly things. Archos covers the major ones. Samsung will cost A LOT more for "just in case" features.

GPS in a tablet may seem like a good idea until you consider having a netbook with GPS. Will you really use it? Have a tablet in your car or mounted to your bike? I use my phone for GPS.
 
Think I am seriously leaning towards the Archos 70....

Samsung or the carriers (whomever is responsible) dropped the ball on the Tab by not offering phone function(s)... If the Tab had it, it would be a no brainer for me... But since it's just a tab, I think I'll go with the Archos...
 
People who are informed about the android world will buy the Archos. Average consumer will buy the Samsung or some other tablet that is heavily marketed.

Example: Average person buys Droid due to commercials. Person who knows android buys droid incredible.

I have been using Android for quite some time now.... I would get the tab if it had phone and I got the X because I wanted the 4.3 screen I became accustomed to from my previous device, the EVO...

Not really... I'm a tech fanatic and I was sure I would get the 101. I have a Moto Milestone right now and wanted to get a Desire HD and the 101 next month.

But after I saw the Archos 7 unboxing I kinda got more interested in the 7 inch form factor and I think it will be great for me. So instead of getting the Desire HD and the 101 I now get the Galaxy Tab and will use it as phone too... lol :D

It's ok, because I carry some sort of bag with me all the time anyway and I do want to have my pdf reader with me all the time. I'm kinda curious though how this will work out (and also about the bluetooth headsets...).
 
If you are an app fan and like to install more than 50 total apps (average), the Archos devices do not have enough device storage. With 2.1, they have 220mb of app install space and with 2.2, that will drop to about 160mb. Even with apps2sd, all but thrifty app installers will run out quickly- unless you want a bunch of tip calculators....

Gamers probably best to stay away for the Archos devices, unless they remap some flash for device storage and only put the OS on the 512mb "rom".

Archos has made a great device with great price point, only to cripple it with a STUPID strage map decision, even though they also have plenty of spare flash memory. In summary, the Archos Gens are like the "G1"s of tablets. Crazy dumb.

I was looking forward to this device, but never expected Archos to be so stupid on their app storage mapping. One more time- STUPID.
 
so having 100 apps wouldnt work? I dont think id need as many, since it would be mainly a video / web / maybe music device, but i would install some basic games and such (angry birds, solopskier when it comes out)
guess it depends on how the galaxy tab w/ wifi is doing by the time the achros 101 is available.
 
Depends on the App size... Some are huge, some are small... You could easily get over 100 depending..
 
VZW will have the Samsung for 599 with no contract.
sheesh! It looks nice and all but i think for the price, the achros will win. of course it depends on if the galaxy tab will offer 2.2 ootb. and how much storage itll have.
