Samsung Transform

But wouldn't a phone that is the exact same thing as the Epic without 4g take sales away from the Epic? Sounds like a dumb move on Sprints part.

I understand what you're saying, Jen. But, in my opinion, Sprint probably dosent really care about sales of one particular phone... they want new and/or renewed contracts, and by adding phones that will appeal to the wide array of users it improves their chances of doing just that. Look at VZW.. it seems like they have so much redundancy in their phone lineup (IMO).. but the public seems to like it. However, I dont see why samsung would want to release this phone, as it might take sales away from their flagship (Epic). Who knows?! ...More choice is better?

Verizon has redundancy?

Droid X: 4" slate: premier phone
Fascinate: 4" slate: premier phone
Incredible: 3.7" slate: premier phone
Droid 2: 3.7" slider: premier phone
Droid Pro: 3.2" qwertyboard: Business/midgrade phone

The Droid X and Fascinate are the only redundancy in the bunch. They have no differentiation with 4g/3g so there are really on three tiers (premier/midgrade/budget). There's no extra charge at the premier level like Sprint has for 4g phones. The Droid Pro will be the worst phone in their lineup spec wise, yet it fills a nitch.

The only other phone in their lineup is the Eris which is on its way out the door. The Droid doesn't count since its replacement is out.

Sprint will have:
Evo: 4.3" slate: 4g premier
Epic: 4" slider: 4g premier
Transform: 3.5" slider: midgrade phone (not even a 3g premier)
Zio: 3.5" slate: budget phone
Optimus: 3.2" slate: budget phone
Intercept: 3.2" slider budget phone

Out the door: Moment, Hero

There is no midgrade/premier 3g level for the most part with sprint. Not everyone has 4g or needs 4g. I actually don't need it with the Overdrive and wifi, but I'm in philly so it's no big deal. Where is Sprint's Incredible or Droid 2? Both 3.5" phones are that much smaller than it's supposed counterparts on Verizon. .3" is a visible difference. I'd imagine .2" is as well. And do we need two slate budget phones? Did we need the Intercept? Would be interesting to see the sales figures for it.

I like the idea of the Transform as a Moment replacement, and the keyboard seems that much nicer than the Epic's. Just still seems like a lackluster lineup below the two 4g phones.

I have to agree that the phones after the Epic and Evo are a bit lacking. Personally, I'm glad that Sprint is releasing the Transform now. My family is switching to Sprint in a month and the Transform will be perfect for our teenager. She doesn't need a high-end phone (and I'm not interested in paying the price for it either), so a Moment-type phone is just what I was wanting for her. The Transform has the physical keyboard she wants and most of the Epic's feature set (if a bit of a downgrade in some places), so it will be perfect for her. Sprint really needs to release a Hero replacement of some sort though. A mid-tier slate phone with a nice camera with flash, AMOLED screen and Android 2.2 would go a long way to filling that gap.

I get the feeling this phone will be feature on Best Buy's free phone Friday....

I also get the feeling this is just a refresh Intercept, from looking at the specs.

The Transform will be their only midgrade phone. The zio and optimus are entry level.
That makes five current android phones in the sstem if you don't count the intercept. And more are on the horizon? And that's not even getting into wp7 phones or new palm hard

Yep 2-3 more androids.. There is a slate that keeps poping up that I thought was going to Sprint. It is a wimax slate, I've been told it may be for Clear only..

these 3 arent the last phones coming just the 3 phones that will support the sprint ID is why they were revealed the way their were still got a few coming mainly HTC sense it has sense and all

stopped at the local sprint store today and played with the display model for 20-30 min. i liked it. screen was crisp and touch responsive, and so were the capacity buttons. smooth transitions and app switching. i'd recommend it to those who want an android but not ready to fork out the extra up front dough and $10/mon fee.

My wife just picked one up today. Seems pretty nice and a definate upgrade from the Intercept. The SprintID feature is standard. The one odd thing is shortcut keys on the QWERTY like hitting "E" opens email. Still trying to figure out how to get around these. So far so good.

are you able to disable sprint id completely? hows the gps? data lock up? i'm interested in picking up a transform next month.

It is the wife's phone so I only helped set it up and played for a few minutes but the SprintID feature is the first thing it asks for when the phone is factory. I THINK that you can hit Cancel and skip it. She chose Social ID so I can't say for sure. Have not tried the GPS, but had no lock up when bouncing around, just a little lag. But remember that I am used to my EVO. Despite the virtually mirrored specs to the Intercept, it seems to perform much better. Of course, she had a lemon Intercept.

I would imagine since it's something that has to be downloaded, it can be ignored and just skipped as mentioned above. Can't imagine you wouldn't be allowed to move forward with the phone without downloading something.

Sprint is trying to do too much now. Sprint ID?

I actually think it's a great idea. I got this for the GF to replace her hero. You can easily skip the ID (although there is a main button for it so it's always in your face). I would not want the ID, but it really looks like a nice way to get Joe Blow into android with less learning curve on customizing.

It had widgets with tips and tricks on each home screen (little "how to" android things that were nice for a first timer). The phone seems really nice and responsive. Very close to vanilla android. I also could use the on screen keyboard in portrait way more accurately than the hero.

It's RevA, internet speeds (going by feel) blow the hero away and the hero was only two weeks old. I didn't use it much, but I noticed no lag to speak of. I would imagine froyo will make it even snappier.

Has anyone seen the specs on the transform? It's the same damn thing as the moment but with an extra cam and a screen bump.

oh and froyo

Is the processor the same? Or is it just the same clock speed? Haven't seen specific processor info.

Keyboard looks a lot nicer too.

No Froyo on mine. It's way more polished (my opinion) than the moment. For a basic android, it is quite nice.
