Help Samsung USB transfer not working

I bought a Samsung Fascinate a few days ago, and have been trying to resolve an issue with the USB transfer.

First of all, I have the correct drivers installed on my computer because I connected my wife's Samsung Fascinate to it and it brings up the USB icon on the phone to select the mode. However, on my phone, nothing comes up at all, and Windows 7 says that the USB device has malfunctioned.

So, I did a hard reset on the phone, and this did not fix the problem. I also performed a factory data reset, and this did not work either.

Now the phone charges just fine, it's just that the USB data transfer does not work. I also checked to ensure that the USB mode was set to Mass Storage, and still nothing. I even tried doing Media Sync to see if it would at least pick up the phone, and it does not. I also tried changing USB cables, and no luck there.

So, I took my phone into the Verizon store. At first they thought I hadn't setup the phone for Mass Storage, so I made them plug it up to a computer there at their store, and they could not figure it out. I asked them if they could somehow reflash the phone, and they said they would not be able to.

So I am running out of options here. The rest of the phone works just fine. I can make phone calls, use the web, and do everything else, except for use USB data on it. I thought if there was a way I could copy an update.zip to the phone somehow and go into the bootloader and run the update.zip if it might re-install the firmware. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

Also, I cannot download the new Samsung OTA update either, it keeps saying it's not available. I thought if I could download this it might fix the problem.

When plugged in, pull down the notification bar on the phone. Click the usb icon and select mount. The folder should show up on your computer.

Make sure you do not have USB Debugging turned on. Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging. This should be unchecked.

I had the same problem until I turned off debugging. Now works fine.

See, there in lies the problem. Because the phone is messed up, whenever you plug it up to the USB cable, nothing ever shows up in the notification bar. I know what you're talking about because I have my wife's Fascinate here too, and I do get the notification so I can mount it. There is something deeper wrong here.

Also, I have ensured that USB debugging is OFF, and still nothing, even after rebooting the phone. Any other ideas?

If none if these work then it sounds like its time to take it to verizon for a fix or replacement.

I am getting a replacement today for the exact same problem. ODIN sees the phone, but I can't see it in ADB & it will only mount the 8MB partition of the SD card with the Autorun software on it. Drivers are installed correctly, and it worked up until a few days ago. When it stopped working, it borked my SD card and I lost everything. I would do as Davidnmegan said and visit/call Verizon and ask for a replacement.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. I had taken it into the store before and they said they couldn't fix it (which is kind of weird, I thought they would be able to reflash the original firmware onto it to something). I guess I will call VZW directly and see if there is anything they can do for me. I bought this phone from a 3rd party, so I am not sure if they will be willing to replace it or not.
