Root Sbf?

OK, I see this all the time in relation to rooting a phone. I understand very little about this stuff, and have no clue what SBF means or how it's done. Could someone please give a quick dumbed down version of what this means? Thanks...

SBF is toward the top. My recollection is that it replaces the system files and your data might still be there. BUT I haven't had to do that for months now so not 100% positive of that.

your data remains unless you do the factory data reset at the end of it, (which is highly recommended)

It's kinda weird, I SBF and my old wallpaper comes back from when I first got the phone. That's the only thing that remains from the old operating system.
SBF does NOT erase your SD card, so if stuff is on that, it will still be there after SBF.
(yes, I do a cache wipe and system wipe)
