We've a TV Chef over here called Jamie Oliver who started a "food revolution" to get those sorts of things banned. As a result of the program, it's now illegal over here to serve processed food in schools.
This was one of the main vids that convinced the government to do something (there is some NSFW language at the start of the vid):
Whilst he's a bit of a tool, he's done some pretty good things over here with regards to kids eating habbits. Things still aren't great, but they're moving in the right direction.
Anybody remember these for school lunch dessert? Peanut Butter "and potato" swirl? I guess with todays restrictions...this would be reclassified as a "meat and veggie meal"

EWWWWWWWWWWWWW I can just imagine how it looks and taste...and my imagination is saying EWWWWWWWWWWWWWe didn't have that potato swirl but we did have some mystery 'beef' swirl roll type thing smothered in gravy. Now that was really gross! Looked like a cinnamon roll but was dry and filled with a gluey 'beef' swirl. I will say it again, gross!
I didn't know butter sammiches were that popular!!!And butter sammiches were great...
Ha, ha. Try bringing anything with peanuts to a school nowadays. You get within 1,000 feet of the school with a PBJ and they call the swat team.
I don't know what has changed in the 30 or so years since I was in grade school, but they way they treat peanut allergies today make me think that I should have seen kids dropping like flies at lunch. And I don't mean this as an insult to folks with peanut allergies, I know it is real. I just don't know why it seems like a recent phenomenon.

I don't think ours were rice, it was more biscuit-like. Couldn't give 'em away at my school and more than one was used as a hockey puck/frisbee/baseball. You had to pay attention to the overhead airspace on that day.Ugggh! I remember that!..it had overcooked mushy rice swirled into beef by-products smothered in brown gravy.. There was this kid I used to ALWAYS give mine to him for his cookies.

Those are the best! Goetze's (pronounced Getz, says so on the package) makes a good version too. Mmmm!Brock caramel candies.. Remember the caramel with powder sugar center?
