Hi and welcome to the forums!
I believe android developers will continue to be in demand as long as the android platform is being used publicly. I started developing android apps by visiting the android developer site. The android SDK is invaluable and there is a lot of sample code to learn from. I use the Eclipse IDE and am finding it quite fun as well as educational. Your java knowledge is definitely going to benefit you.
