Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

when you install the rom, it deposits PH98IMG onto the sd card, containing the boot image, wich contains the kernel. in amons developer menu, you will find an option to "reboot to bootloader". select that option. you will be taken to fastboot, where you will select "bootloader" with the phones vol rocker and power button. this will take you to hboot. once there, hboot will find the PH98IMG,and ask you if you wish to update it. select yes. you should then see something similar to your post above- that actually what the "error message" you described was doing. it was installing a boot image, that contained a kernel.

if this is the only rom youve tried to install, you may have allready installed the kernel above :D

dont forget, you will need to install the "old firmware" patch since youre still on gingerbread firmware :)

where (or how) is the option to install the "old firmware" because I don't recall seeing any instructions?

Thank You!

FYI, the "CleanRom" that I think I flashed correctly was entered as follows:

C:\mini-adb_vigor\Stock Rooted ROM - Vigor - WWE 2.01.605.11

now,im confused... did you enter that as a command?

roms are left zipped up,and flashed using the phones menus, not the cmd window.

no command, sorry Scotty....meant to show how the name of the Rom that I flashed looked directly from my phone, starting with "Stock Rooted Rom etc."

ooooh,gotcha. thats good ;)

did you follow these instructions?

Place ROM on SD Card
Reboot to recovery
Wipe all data / Factory reset - Do not restore anything from back up. Do not ask in the thread if you can. You will be referred back to here!
Flash ROM. When ROM Completes you will have the option to install old firmware patch if needed. It will be located on the SD Card in the CleanROM Folder.
Now you will need to manually boot to bootloader. Do this by selecting Reboot to Bootloader via the Recoveries Development Menu (Amon Ra).
Device will then boot to fastboot.
Press Power to install the kernel / boot.img
Reboot
Profit!

ive never flashed this rom,so i dont know if it expects you to simply navigate to the cleanrom folder and flash the old firmware patch,or if it will ask you "flash old firmware patch,yes/no"

if you arent asked "flash patch,yes/no" then simply select flash zip menu again, and navigate to the cleanrom folder, then flash the firmware patch inside.

edit:

one last thing, dont forget to remove PH98IMG from your sd card after the rom is flashed and running. as yovue discovered,it can keep you out of recovery in emergencies ;)

I really appreciate the time you are spending......when I went back to zip menu there is no CleanRom folder so nowhere to get firmware.

I will flash the rom you did if you can tell me what/where/how? Man, my Eris was so damn easy...

As I recall from flashing a week ago, it did not ask anything about flashing the patch, you need to navigate to the clean Rom folder and select it.

Also, you were the one who recommended this Rom to me and you've never flashed it?:P

I'm confused a little bit with regards to this. In the thread for the ROM in question from XDA it says:
scrosler said:
ROM No longer requires you to be on the leaked Firmware! If you are then great! If you are on old firmware then great!

Is this what you are talking about? As you're aware I tried this same ROM and although I got it to boot up (once) it would not read the SD Card and after rebooting the first time I was stuck in bootloop mode. What am I missing?

You don't need to update the firmware, but there is a patch you need to run. It essentially makes your Rom think your phone has the new firmware. If you follow the instructions from XDA there is a part where you have the option to flash the patch. Youll go into amon ra and select flash zip, choose zip from ad card, then find the clean Rom folder. In that folder there should be a zip called "old firmware patch" or something like that. Flash that, then move onto the next step.

I'm sending this from my phone, so hopefully it makes sense, limited on typing speed and therefor length:)

Has anyone run into this issue when running wifi on the ICS leak - 3G and wifi are in the notification bar at the same time. This does not happen when I am not on wifi - only when connected to a wifi signal. I let the phone settle in overnight and when I woke up it was fine - the 3G signal dropped off, but I've since left my wifi connection and come back to it - now both the 3G and Wifi signals are showing again. Totally confused

I don't know that all ROMs will work that way, I just know clean ROM because I installed it about a week ago. Good luck!

I'm actually looking at doing Clean Rom now. I just created another Nandroid backup just in case and I can boot into recovery through ROM Toolbox just fine. I see the menu items for both factory reset and install from zip and I see the clean rom folder a-ok so I guess I'm ready to go. Only questions I have are: will my phone boot back into recovery after doing a factory reset or does it not reboot and just stay in RA recovery and also will I have to do the firmware patch? I'm assuming I will because I bootlooped the last time I tried loading a ROM, although it was a different one. Other than that I think I'm ready to give this another go! :D

Oooops...

So say I'm on this step:

Now you will need to manually boot to bootloader. Do this by selecting Reboot to Bootloader via the Recoveries Development Menu (Amon Ra).

What if I reboot instead of going into the development menu, will this be an issue? I'm thinking it might be...

got me there. :i keep meaning to but havent yet. mainly becasue visually its very stock, and i really like nillsp's business darkish theme.

lots of folks have used it and have nothing but good things to say,so i was pretty confident to recomend it :D

only when sending/recieving mms. 3g will appear next to wifi, and then disapear after the mms is sent/recieved. if its done it any other times, ive not caught it.

any ICS rom thats based on the newes leak, should work fine on GB firmware if you run the patch.

if you didnt boot to bootloader, then you didnt install the kernel, unless scripts have been added for the s-off croud to do it from recovery. if this is the case, and you launched your recovery from fastboot, then you may be OK :D

if your phone doesnt boot, its prolly becasue the kernel didnt flash. just power off, power on into hboot, and allow the ph98img to flash and you should be goot to go. :captain:

I actually used ROM toolbox to boot back into recovery and started the whole process over again, this time using the developer menu to boot into the bootloader. What's weird is the superuser icon is showing but it wouldn't give ROM toolbox superuser permission. I had to go into superuser and toggle rom toolbox, then it worked. Strange. Either way I'm currently running CleanROM Developer Edition 1.2. I'm kind of meh with it so far, I haven't noticed any real differences. I'll wait a while and probably nandroid back to stock then maybe try an ICS based one later next week.

So Scotty, if I am currently running cleanrom and want to.try business sense. What is the easiest way to switch? Half the reason I went for CleanRom is that the install instructions were a bit clearer than Nilps. Any tips?

I kind of like to switch around and mess with different Roms sometime.

you can do it pretty much exacely like you did cleanrom, the kernel will auto install just like cleanroms does. just leave the patch on your sd where you can find it,and flash it just like you did the other :)

ive been having the 4g issues that alot of folks have been having after s-off and messing with radios,so as soon as im sure ive got that worked out,i may try scrosslers developer edition, wich is senseless. running cm9 on my sensation really makes me long for AOSP on the rezound :(

newts evita/endeavor sense 4.0 port is pretty slick, but somewhat buggy for DD use if your picky. ican tolerate a high bug level for a day or 2,lol,but bluetooth didnt work so i had to restore a backup after a couple hours. prolly try joels bamf evita port as well,as sense 4.0 is kinda neaT,AS sense goes  again, ive run really functional sense 4.0 pors on my sensation, cant wait for them to get polished up a lil on the rezound :)

So the patch I have to run is the same for any ics rom?

Also, I really dont like switching more than once every couple weeks, so I need stable. Any stable Roms with sense 4.0? I mean like good to go for daily use like clean Rom is? Do those all work the same? Flash the rom/kernel then firmware patch, remove ph98img from sd card and good to go?

yup :)

i would not really say either of the 4.0 roms is anywhere near as stable and DDable as cleanrom. they are fun to play with for a couple days, but all need animations turned off in the dev menu, and potential issues with mms and bluetooth.

So, is business sense stable enough for daily use?

Do you know how to say anything besides

Yup :)

Haha, sorry had to say it. I think I will give business sense a try this weekend then. I like flashing a new Rom every couple weeks, feels like I got a new phone, lol. Does business sense have the awesome expanded quick settings that clean Rom has? that's my favorite part!
