I had the same issue with my first android handset from t-mobile, which was and still is a HTC Desire C. When I receive a call or bring up the dialer to make a call the screen would turn off. Sometime it would stay on but that was 1/10th of the time.....very annoying indeed, I know. One shop I went to said it was a sensor problem.... in the end T-Mobile replaced the handset as it was a new contract. they wanted to palm me of with a second hand handset, considering it was a new phone and new contract. but I told them after an argument "let the courts decide and you will have to pay the court costs!" they buckle with some lame excuse and replace the handset with a new one. it could be the firmware or hardware issue.

its a software bug
try using the stay awake feature in the display settings to see if you can see the calls while charging, also you can turn autobrightness on.from my experience either of those 2 should bypass the bug, while we wait for a bugfix (which they told me they will release it,that was ~2 months ago)
