Screen Burn-in / Image Retention

Just got a brand new Samsung Galaxy S2, and couldn't help but notice a persistent image in the background, which pops out on specific colors.

It looks like the burned in image shows the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo at the top, followed by the AMOLED Logo, then the Android logo.

Just thought I would share this with you.

That's strange, I thought plasma TVs were the only screen types prone to image retention or burn-in (and permanent burn-in is reportedly very rare on modern plasma screens).
If my phone showed where you've got there, I would take it straight back to the store and ask for a replacement.

Welcome to Android Forums!!

That's really odd. Thanks for sharing.

How old is your phone? Does it show the image even with the battery removed?

This is sheer unacceptable demand for new set and don't agree for screen change as the guys in service center are not skilled as factory technicians and usually known to F*** up rather than Fix up.

The phone is brand new, had it for only 1 day. The image disappears when the screen is switched off.

I agree that screen burn in / image retention is most likely on plasma screen. So I am not sure what is exactly happening with my screen. It could be something else.

Looking closer at the burnt in image, I found that it is exactly a superimposed image of the plastic screen protector that is shipped with the phone.

Here's what it looks like:

Is it possible that this phone might have been sitting on display in direct sunlight with the plastic protector on which could have affected the screen the way it did?

Mine exhibits image retention in regular use. E.g. if you use an app with a white area where the notification/status bar would otherwise be, you will see dark areas where your phone signal, alarm indicator, and time are displayed. It's a lot like what the old Plasma TV displays would do.

That sounds the most likely, as nothing on the phone that I've seen show that display. UV burn while on display, that would suck. If this is true I my opinion it would be on the seller to replace the unit. I know that I broke the seal on my box for mine and so far have seen no signs of burn in.

Yes it looks like someone set the plastic on the screen when it was hot, or the sun melted the plastic image onto the screen.

Where did you buy it from?

so if that is true, something INFRONT of the screen can create a burn-in on the face, but its still possible the AMOLED screen does not burn in from the DISPLAY side.

interesting.

be good to find out just how long it had the contitions (sun/heat) for to create that.

I have noticed image retention on my S2 - have only just got it. Very visible when switching to grey backgrounds but does disappear. This is on default 40% brightness with Auto off.

Have done some research and oled DOES suffer from IR and permanent screen burn as well as viewing angle wash off...

a lot of industry hype and misinformation hides these facts.
