Help Screen dead but phone alive - need a quick walk through on blind tapping!

Hello!

Had my Z since last october, love it to bits (only phone I found worthy enough to replace my n95 8gb) unfortunately yesterday the screen died. It will still ring, and i can swipe to answer, but the display is just blank.

It's still under warranty, but before i send it off I need to backup all my texts/pictures etc.

It's defaulted to charge only when a usb cable is connected, what I need help with from you lovely people is what are the steps i need from first turning it on and plugging in the cable to turn on htc sync.

From what i remember, on the home screen when the usb cable is connected, a symbol appears at the top left, and if you swipe down from the top you can then select the usb method (charge, disk, sync etc)

any screenshots at all would be massively helpful!!

Have you tried powering it down and removing the battery for 10/15mins before restarting? That can occasionally "fix" apparant hardware failures.... not saying it will in this case but it's worth a try.

Yep, had the battery out for 24hrs. Put it back in this evening and still the same.
What happened - the phone was in my pocket, i was lying down, rolled over, realised i was on my phone, jumped up and the display was just showing white.
Restarted it, and it's been like this since.

I can receive and answer calls, and i can swipe to unlock it and I remembered on the bottom right on the home screen is a torch app, when i press that area of the screen the flash comes on, so I know everything is working ok... I just can't see it!

Really need to get my contacts backed up before I send the phone off to be repaired :(

Are all gallery pics stored on the SD card do you know?

hey same thing happened to me same story weird well have u found a solution?

No :(

I phoned up HTC, who were very helpful. I spoke to a guy there who has a desire z, he said he'll go home tonight and write down the steps needed to turn on sync.

Spoke to him the next day and he said there's no point, it's too complicated to do it blind, the only way would be if a friend brought their desire z round to your house and you mimicked exactly what they did, even then you'd probably get it wrong!

So, I've had to send it off to be fixed without anything backed up. Took the memory card out though, i hope the dodgy pics of my mrs aren't stored elsewhere on the phone  lol.

That's why I always recommend syncing Contacts with Google, even if you've no intention of using Gmail. :) Don't despair just yet though. If it comes back reset you may still find that it miraculously restores itself thanks to the well-hidden "Backup" option in Settings/Privacy which is enabled by default.

Here's hoping for a quick turnaround.

I'll have to pick your brains on how to attempt a restore when it comes back!
