Help Screen dims by itself to lowest setting - HELP!

My HTC EVO 4G dims to the lowest brightness setting on it's own randomly without my touching any settings. It is happening regularly and often. This started happening within last 48 hours without downloading any new apps or updating any system updates.

I am up to date on my firmware, profile, PRL and HTC software as of March 7, 2012. I thought maybe it was the QUICK SETTING app I installed (which worked fine for last 18 months) - so I uninstalled it and it is still dimming to the lowest setting by itself.

Few quirks I noticed: When the screen dims and I click the QUICK SETTING app to raise the setting, (very often) the screen goes back up to the brighter setting, although not 100% of the time. Once in the settings screen, I can see that the brightness scroll bar has been drawn down the its lowest setting.

I tried resetting it with and without the AUTO BRIGHTNESS - no help. I tried the SCREEN TIMEOUT at various settings - no help. I have tried setting various things with the phone's original SETTINGS menu - no help. I took the battery out for 60 seconds and tried - no help.

One thing I have not yet tried is factory reset which I do not want to do, if at all possible.

Any ideas?

You could possibly try root apps for your phones display
Adjbrightness I use on my Droid X to turn off the hard keys. Of course there are plenty of choices.

What do you mean by "root" apps? You mean I need to root my phone? My phone is not rooted and don't want to root it.

Is there any app that you might have installed around the time the issue started? If so, obviously uninstall. Beyond that, it would seem to me to either be a hardware issue (bad) or a firmware issue. From what you've posted, I can't think of anything but a hard reset left to do. Make sure your data is sync'd with Google before you do. I've been rooted for so long, I don't know what non-root backup solutions exist. At the very least, you could d/l something like app dragon to manufacture a list of what apps you need to get after the reset. Good luck!

Do you have the application easy battery saver, or anything similar? I had the same issue but remembered that I have that application in "Super Saver Mode" and once I switched it to any other setting including "Normal Mode" my screen stopped dimming on its own.

You can save your sms and texts easily with SMS Backup and Restore. It also saves call logs.
If your contacts aren't sync'd with Google, open your people app hit menu / import/export then select export to sd. This will save your contacts to your sd card, so you can restore them after a data reset.

I'm with Pasta, unless its a rogue power saver app, the last thing to try is a data reset. :(

I had exactly the same issue on my EVO 4g (for Virgin Mobile) - dims all by itself. I did a factory reinstall, tried updating everything - to no avail.

Yesterday, I went back to Radio Shack and exchanged it under my 30 day warranty. Got a fresh one that I haven't done ANYTHING to (I haven't even signed into my Gmail acct).

Guess what? Same exact issue. And when I go from my camera to my home screen, the home screen is at maximum brightness for about 1 second, before it gradually fades back to normal. Headed to the Shack right now to try yet another one (3rd one is hopefully a charm).

These phones (apart from horribly digitized phone call quality) are amazing phones, but they're ridden with technical issues, which seem to fluctuate depending on how lucky you were with the particular specimen you purchased.

Someone needs to get fired in quality control over at HTC.
