Help Screen goes dark

When I make a phone call, my screen usually goes dark. This is a problem when I need to press 1 for whatever, etc. Can't even retreive my voice mails sometimes because I can't type in my PIN.

How do I keep the screen lit or turn it back on if I need to access the keyboard? (HTC Incredible)

there is a light sensor on the top part of the phone around the verizon logo, so you can cover the sensor and then uncover and the screen should come on. There's no way to keep it on permanently or else you would be hitting buttons with your face when you have the phone to your ear.
