Screen goes off during a call

Hi folks

generally been happy with my Desire but recently it has developed a new feature which is a bit of a pain..


During a call the screen intermittanly goes off, and there is also no response from the power button so the only way of ending a call and gettig the phone back on is by removing the batttery,

It only happens during a call and all other functionality is not affected.
Over the past few days it is happening more often than not, so I'm just wandering if anyone else had had this, or is aware of a fix.

Is the proximity sensor obstructed in any way? Dirt? Screen protector?
