Help Screen going crazy! UPDATE

UKCatFan

Android Expert
I have had this happen a few times in the month I have had the phone, but it has started to happen daily now. The screen will just go completely crazy like something is tapping wildly. It will switch screens like a swipe, open apps, place calls, etc. The only thing I have found to (temporarily) stop it is to pull the battery. I have searched around and am starting to worry that it is a hardware problem. Has anyone else seen this happen or have any ideas on what could be causing it?

A little more info:
There were no app changes before it started happening
It did it before I rooted and after
It has happend while plugged in and while not
I have made sure it is not the phone holding hand causing it
It has happened when I am not even touching the phone
Once I couldn't even unlock the phone because I couldn't draw the pattern before it registered clicking on other parts of the screen

Well, there is more going on that I thought and the phone is going back to Metro. Last night the phone got really hot and was practically unresponsive to anything but still had the screen clicking on its own. I managed to get to battery usage and found that it thought it had been unplugged for 11,337 days! The battery usage was 63% system and 38% display (more than 100% ???). The battery had gone down to about 50% remaining power after only two hours.

I just want everyone else to know in case they have similar problems. I think this thing is a lemon.

Haha. I didnt realize lemon law would apply to a phone.

Well I'd say you can try pushing the 2.2 update posted in this forum by andyo70 and see if that will take care of it if it is a software issue. If it is in fact a hardware issue you would need to send it back. But make sure that you un-root your phone and put any deleted apk's back. The easiest way to get it back to stock would probably be the 2.2 update anyways.

Also did your phone come stock with the 2.2 or 2.2.1?

If your phone is rooted just unroot it and go to the Metro Service center. They will replace it without many questions.

I unrooted and took it to them. The screen was acting crazy for them as well, so they probably couldn't have navigated anywhere to tell if it had been rooted anyway. They are going to replace it, but not until next week when more are in stock. So, that means I am going to probably have to deal with the 2.2.1 issue. I would rather deal with that than have my phone catch fire though.

Have the same thing happen to me -- but only when I plug the phone into certain chargers. Some chargers seem to cause this problem, and some don't ... as in "the problem usually happens when I plug the phone into Wall Chargers A, B, and C." and "The problem NEVER happens when I plug the phone into Wall Chargers D, E, and F, and Car Chargers G & H."

Thanks for the input. That was actually one of my first thoughts. I bought a cheap charger with a USB cable that plugs into a base. I had been using it connected to the computer. I stopped using it after the first sign of a problem. It still kept happening. Now after I have refreshed to a factory state, I have used the cheap charger again and have had no ill effects. I am not completely ruling it out yet, but I do not think the charger was the cause.

I am seriously thinking that LG Home got corrupted or something like that. I thought back to when it really went crazy (was acting strange before then though) and it happened right after I was trying to rearrange some apps in the system stray and got a message that LG Home crashed. I had seen that once before doing the same thing, so I didn't think too much of it.

The conclusion though is that I am going to go ahead and take the new phone offered by Metro and take a gamble that it will have 2.2.1 instead of 2.2. The only thing I really am going to miss is Titanium Backup. I had enabled tethering, but probably wouldn't use it much and removing bloat only saved me a few MB. The biggest bloat is ThinkFree Office and it is actually useful so I kept it.

Who knows, maybe my new one will still be 2.2
