Screen is Grainy?

First, I must start off by saying that this phone is great. It's everything I could want. Fast, big, thin, good looking, NFC, Android 4.0, Google Phone, the list goes on and on. And I should also mention that I can't see myself returning this. I need a new phone and this phone is simply the best Android phone on the market at this time.

My problem is the screen. The screen's resolution is great, viewing angles are great, in every lighting it looks great. But what I can't get over is the graininess of the screen. The splash screen when it boots up looks washed out and so does the Facebook app. And every time there is white I feel like I'm looking at a mesh of different colors. And on my homescreen with the wallpaper it looks this way too.

Is this a defect in my phone? Is this a result of pentile (don't think so) or the AMOLED? For such an awesome phone I would hate to have to dredge its screen for the next 20 months.

I have this same thing.

I think it's the apps and not the screen. If you view the icons or an HD movie it looks great. even my HD wall paper looks great. But if I open Facebook it looks like what you described.

In Aldiko you can't notice anything it's just a white background. In Facebook you can definitely tell. In the web browser it's really faint and barely noticeable.

So, I think it's the apps in my opinion.

That's interesting that you said that.

I just downloaded a HD wallpaper from the internet and set it as my background and it looks FANTASTIC. Also, my HD watching experiences are amazing too. This is strange. I think the issue is lighter colors. What is it with the lighter colors?
 
That mesh look is a pentile characteristic. That's the only reason I didn't get the phone. I'm amongst the minority to whom pentile tech is very noticable, and it bothers me quite a bit.

I tend to agree with you. Can't stand PenTile on the Bionic or on my buddy's Samsung Focus (WP7). However, on the GNex it is VERY hard to notice the PenTile Effect without bringing the phone within inches of my eyes. It simply looks fantastic and I never notice the PenTile Effect anymore.
 
I can see a mesh looking at white backgrounds up close on both mine and my friends phone. It is most noticeable on solid gray colors and it looks worst when you turn the brightness down.

I think it is just the design of the screen. I really don't see it unless I am really looking for it, but it is there.

The boot animation looks like crap to me too. It looks washed out and stutters.

No, not even close to a droid bionic with a different arrangement, that phone you could see the diagonal arrangement.

I just put my gazillion lumen flashlight on it to see if I can see this, got the screen to light up by putting it on the sensor only.

Nope. Nothing.

edit: boot screen isn't the best quality on the animation, duh, that's a given.
 
This problem comes through at brightness under 50%. There was a thread over at xda, I think, about the grainy look of "white" when the brightness is down. It's a little frustrating, unless you convince yourself that it's a textured, papyrus-like look. Go with that.

I think this is intentional. The more white pixels on the screen, the more aggressive the auto-dim is.

Try this experiment. Go to the Google.com page, and look at the whites. Then, click in the dialog box to bring up the keyboard (so that only half the screen is white). Did you notice the whites get brighter?

The phone is programmed to auto-dim more as the number of white pixels on the screen increases.
 
I am a pixel peeper....super picky about displays. That being said, this display is smooooooth.
Use high quality wallpaper..and turn OFF auto brightness. I keep mine about 65 to 70 percent brightness all day. Battery is fine..display is sweet.

Agreed. Pentile looks like crap at low brightness. I stayed away from all other pentile phones... but this one is fine. Nice tight display. Just keep the brightness above 60%.
 
I get this in the web browser and facebook app. Not sure why but it's a sort of grey and white noise effect. It makes it a lot easier on the eyes. When you need it to be white in video etc it's fine.

Wow. Never noticed that before. I hate that my phone is smarter than me. LOL.
 
I think the "texturing" is most noticeable on a gray screen, like the default contact picture. My dell e1505 laptop has a similar texture like effect. Sure if you stare at the screen rather than what it is displaying, you start to notice that the screen is fixed while the displayed image is whats moving and you will start to see all sorts of weird artifacts... best to train yourself to look past it...
