Help Screen issue

Longdene

Newbie
The screen on my 5 month old Desire has gone partially black at the very bottom, where the phone button is, and has very thin coloured vertical lines running down the lefthand side of the screen. This happened without warning. I returned it to my service provider, who tell me that it has been damaged, and is not covered under warranty. The suggestion is that I have dropped it or sat on it, neither of which I have done.
My question is, could the phone have developed a fault with the screen, or is my service provider correct and I have unknowingly damaged it? There is no physical damage to the phone, and it works perfectly well.

This sounds more like a copout from your service provider, or maybe the person who looked at the fault is one of these people that doesn't understand technical things.
It is possible to develop this kind of fault on its own, it could be caused by a faulty component on the motherboard or even a dry joint.

Well, my handset has been returned to me, and this is what the screen looks like:

I would appreciate any feedback, positive or negative, as I would like to be well informed when I call my service provider to argue my case for a repair under warranty.

I just get the impression that the default response from them when a screen is faulty, is to say that it has been damaged (my fault in other words).

Typical cop out - it's your fault as you've used it. :p
Screen isn't cracked so I would agree it hasn't been dropped.
Fault probably a break somewhere, either dry joint/bad connection. As to cause difficult to say. Could be from external pressure distorting/moving something or manufacturing fault. Be difficult to prove one way or the other really. I would argue it is not fit for purpose and ask them to fix it.

Not sure where you live, but in UK goods have to be fit for purpose and for a reasonable amount of time. This takes into account the price you paid for the goods so forget about 12 months gaurantee - these are in addition to your consumer rights. Problem here in UK is people think once the 12 months is up they are screwed, which is completely misleading.

If you can't be bothered with a fight (and it will often come to one because most people can't be bothered to pursue things so company's try it on) how much would a local stall/shop charge to replace it? Just googled it and first link up quote
