Two horizontal white bars suddenly appeared between the home icon and the return/back icon. Upper bar is slightly longer than the bar below it. Any ideas what these are? There is no apparent function when they are tapped. Unit is still under warranty but vendor says to do a factory reset to see if that "fixes" the issue.

Hello again, zman44. Have you installed and/or removed any 3rd party launchers? I'm wondering if the dock divider is showing up from a previous configuration.
If not, and you're using the stock launcher, try going into the Application Manager and removing the cache and data from the stock launcher, then rebooting.
If you still see the bars, the factory data reset would likely wash out that issue.
Frisco........not sure what I did but I did try rebooting and the lines have gone away. At least for now. I really wish I knew what caused them in the first place though. I have not installed any app launchers beyond what came with the tablet. Since it is still under warranty I will keep an eye on this issue. Thanks for your assistance. .
