Help Screen lock during call

Me and my girlfriend both have the Spica (2.1). However, her phone seems to unlock itself when she is making calls. The dialer is drawn and she presses the dial with her face resulting in a huge amount of "beeps!!" in my ear while talking to her. My phone doesn't seem to behave that way.
Locking with "On/Off" button doesn't always work, unforunately. Is there any app or some kind of solution for this?

The way the lock on/off screen button works is to not press it as soon as you click the name and call but wait for the phone to start ringing until you press it after that it should be ok. So say your calling someone from the contact list click the call button, put the phone to your ear, when you start hearing the ringing sound, click the lock button.
