Help Screen Not Working

Apologies if there is an answer to this elsewhere, I can't find it, feel free to direct me to the right place....

Having dropped my S3 flat on its screen, the screen no longer works. When turned on the back and menu buttons light up but no action on the screen. I was hoping that the digitizer flex cable had just come loose, so I opened her up but it was fine.

Would it be safe to assume the digitizer is screwed and the only way forward is to replace?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe an answer could be found here.

Samsung Galaxy S III Repair - iFixit

I looked through this forum as well as the fixit website. I too dropped my Galaxy S3 and the screen did not crack but it simply shows a few lines. You can see the buttons still work and I can hear my desktop (bubbles from fish tank) and I can also receive calls and talk. But my square trade warranty expired (would have been nice if they warned me. geez every OTHER website annoys you with emails to renew...but that's for another post).

Is this fixable? This is my first smartphone and have no clue about taking it apart. Or should I just go to Verizon and try my luck with them?

Welcome Commodore Di!!

Well, in my personal opinion, I would take it to someone who knows what they are doing.
Whether is be Verizon or someone else. And if you can afford it. I only say that because I am a clumsy, impatient oaf and have screwed up 1 device too many trying to replace parts :p

If you feel comfortable with the instructions at IFixit, and your abilities to do so, then by all means go for it:) If something goes wonky, then sub out the repair ;)

It is totally up to you:)

Edit: whoops! where are my manners??!!! Welcome to the OP, jdoran, too :D

Thanks for the welcome Mike.

I spoke to some of the phone-savvy geeks at work and they encouraged me to simply replace the screen and digitizer of the phone. One guy just did so for his iPhone for $60 and said it was not that difficult. However, when we looked at the parts to replace for Galaxy S3 at several sites (ifixit, amazon and others), the price ranges from $150-199 just for the parts!

I called Verizon just to see if I had any recourse with them and due to the share plan we have I can get another S3 for $99. (with a renewal contract, of course). I can also upgrade to S4 and other phones so I am weighing my options.

Do you know (or maybe I should post separately), if I get another S3 can I clone it for my apps and configuration? I know I have my contacts, music and photos backed up, but I am not looking forward to downloading all my apps and backgrounds and configuring the various ringtones for my contacts... do you know if this is doable?

Thanks in advance.

Not without rooting it but that is neither here nor there since your screen is broken:(

As far as cloning your current device and making a new device the same setup?? I don't think that is possible. (I assumed by "configuration" you mean your homescreen setup, ringtone assignments, alerts etc?)

yes, that is what I meant. Am I the only one who doesn't look forward to getting a new phone due to having to re-configure it? I should develop my own cloning app....
