E-mail is not accessing storage and the a "screen overlay" permission needs to be "off"... Process is confusing / frustrating...

That's a good article scary has linked. For the record, on a Samsung note 4 (and probably other Samsungs) the "side key panel" that can be enabled in settings-one handed operation is also an overlay that has to be disabled. This feature does not appear in the list of apps with overlays... (And can be hard to spot!)
