Screen resolution question for those owning the Note 2

Hi all. I went to the Sprint store to play with the Note 2 and decide if I want to pre-order on Verizon. I was blown away by the size of the screen and sheer beauty and feel of the phone. I'm 6'8" so it felt very nice in my hand despite the large size. But, I have a question for those who have gotten to use it much more than my brief time with it....

How do you feel about the screen resolution? I realize the ppi numbers are a little lower than other phones, but in my actually using it in the store, I felt that the youtube videos were pixelated on the huge screen compared to the other devices near it. Same with pictures on the internet. Is this concern of mine valid? Or, could I simply have been messing with a faulty device? I am looking for honest feedback from those who can separate any true issues from their undying love for the device. I do a lot of video watching and picture viewing on my phone and the display unit, on its own, was concerning.

Thanks all!!

Although the pixel density is lower than on the s3 (same resolution spread over a larger screen) the note 2 screen has 3 sub pixels per pixel. I don't get any pixelation during any video unless my wireless connection is atrocious which obviously degrades the quality of the video.

By default the youtube app doesn't do high quality over non-wifi, of course you should have been in the store.

Anyway, I don't see any pixelation of HD streams off you tube

Coming from an iPhone 4 with retina screen, I can see the differences between the two screens and, in that respect, the Note 2 screen is a little off par in this comparison. However, having used the Note 2 this past weekend, I don't notice any particular issues with the resolution whether it be from YouTube vids or my pictures. Everything looks crystal clear with no pixelation issues.

The sprint store wasn't running wifi on any of the devices so only a sketchy 3G signal was coming through. But, that was the same signal on the other phones too so not sure. I was surprised to see the same thing on pics. I went to thechive.com and when the pictues were made to appear larger than the default thumbnail view, they pixelated heavily.

I'm 6'6" and I got the phone because proportionally to me this is the size my wife's IPhone 5 is to her.

With regard to the screen resolution. There is a noticeable difference in the screen resolution from the iphone 5 because of the pixel density. That said I have noticed that because this is a 720p HD screen that when streaming/watching HD video I don't notice the difference. I notice the lack of ppi difference most when streaming low quality videos if that makes sense, cause it doesn't to me. With the other specs though, ram, processor speed, battery life, screen size, micro sd memory this phone is the no brainer. If there was a phone that had all of those options and a better screen I'd go there.

I agree. It is all about content. The HD videos on Youtube look decent to me. If I watch a Bluray rip on my phone (off my micro SD card), it looks spectacular. Most of my Bluray rips are 720P (that I encode to H.264 on a PC with Handbrake.... files sizes range from 1.5GB to 4GB depending on the movie).

Well put. That fantasy phone you speak of may be unveiled tomorrow via Verizon and HTC. But, I really love the way the Samsung series (S3 & Note 2) look and feel. It would be tough for me to embrace an HTC phone given the lack of love and support for their devices. With that said, a 5" LCD3 1080p screen with 440ppi is intriguing.

Sounds like I may have been playing with a faulty device today. From what everyone is saying, the experience I had today is not the norm. Thank you for all the feedback!

Love HTC (maybe not their updates) but Verizon has poor coverage and higher prices compared to AT&T in my area so that eliminates the usefulness of a phone such as the Note 2 or the fabled HTC phone if the network isn't there.

Dont get fooled by the default reduced non-HD mobile youtube display resolution

I shot lots of pics and HD Video and playing / viewing these on the Note2 look fantastic.

All the new round of 1080p Display phones are OK - except compared to GNote2 they missed the boat with smaller non removable batteries and no SD Card expansion - so "FAIL"!

is handbrake better than Kies?

What are the best settings to use for video for the galaxy note 2 then using something like Super?

I've used Kies Air once just to try it out, but I'm not too familiar with it. I don't think Kies does video conversion/encoding. I remember it doing file transfer and backup. Handbrake takes a video (could be AVI, MKV, MPG2.....) and encodes/converts to MPEG4 (H.264). It can produce great looking videos with very small file sizes. There is a ton of info out there on Handbrake if you want to give it a try.

I owned an iPhone 5 for a month before switching to the Note 2.

The resolution is fine. The screen is fine.

I like having pure 720p because a lot of content is formatted that way. I don't miss the extra brightness of the iPhone 5.

I think what you're seeing with the pixelation in the YouTube videos is the same effect that happened when people started buying 50" TVs when most of the programming was SD. The YouTube videos were probably 240p streams which look a'ight on a tiny screen. But the 5.5" screen exposed all of the flaws in the picture, including pixelation and macroblocking. You're going to get that with 240p. People who were used to their 19" TVs, which hid a lot of the video artifacts, thought their 50" TVs looked terrible displaying SD programs. Some things look better on an iPhone because the screen is too small to notice/resolve video artifacts. They will appear as clear as day on a 5.5" screen.

That said, 720p mkv video files looks great on the Note 2.

Thats the one thing I think the iP5 has over the Note II is the screen clarity. The same thing viewed on both devices looked detailed and refined on the iPhone; esp in the games dept.
