Root Screen Shift/Fragmenting when OC in CM7.1

I spent most of yesterday reading as much as I could find about rooting and deciding what ROM to use. I wasn't originally intending to use a ROM, but it didn't seem like that much of a leap after rooting.

I got Reppard's CM 7.1 working, and am quite happy with it. Much more customization than 2.2 that I was using, and without the bloatware, I have a little more space for my apps.

While I don't play games, I figured since the functionality is there...might as well see if it can overclock. To my disappointment, I can't get it to go over the stock 600mhz without getting what appears to be fragmentation and screen shifting. It's similar to what I got on my PC when I had overclocked my video card. But even then, I backed it down a little, and it was stable. On my phone however, backing it down brings it right back to stock ):

Is there perhaps some step I'm missing? Something I could do to give this another try at overclocking? Should I try other OC apps? Or am I just REALLY unlucky?

There are better updated CM7 ROMs, BACKside is the most stable ROM we currently have. BobZhome's latest build has given me force closes of many apps... PlayfulGod hasn't updated his CM7 for a while now, he devs for a lot of phones, he usually makes the ROM functional and then goes to dev for another device. He does not own an optimus M so he cannot try out his own ROM. BobZhome owns an optimus V which is very similar to the M, so he can't try out his M ROMs because touchscreen would not work on his V with an M rom, but building an M rom and a V rom is very similar, so he can build it for his v to try on. I port V ROMs that work well enough to use as a daily and I own an M. I will own a V as well either today or tomorrow. There are many benefits of BACKside over the other CM7 Roms, I can't find a disadvantage, if anything, it's opinion

So basically I'm just saying, try another ROM

Thank you for a quick response. I will look into BACKside next. I have this one set up a way that I like, but I guess I can backup and try another to see if the overclock will work.

Well, looks like I got BACKside working. I'm backing up after installing my apps, will have to try the overclock next.

Just looked at the CPU frequency menu. There's nothing between 600 and 729? That's optimistic. I set it at 729, running the benchmark program now. Before, just sliding the screen a few times would cause artifacts. I was able to slide, open a few programs, and even the camera without any problems. So...maybe it will work out afterall.

Sheesh, and here I was looking to get a Connect. Cut the bloatware, new ROM, possibly over/underclocking...maybe I can save the $200+ for a while.

Seems my CPU frequency maxes out at 787. I was able to navigate with 806 for a bit, but it wouldn't finish the benchmark more than once. Thanks for the advice to switch ROMs.

My M does the same thing, I got an Optimus V a few days ago and I'm able to overclock it at 844 MHz :D and I got everything from metropcs working on it, DATA+MMS+CALLS, Everything works, I love my OV, it's super fast.

It's hard to show anyone WHY I rooted/overclocked the phone. It's much more customizable, so *I* know the difference is there, but just to show someone for 2 minutes doesn't seem to get across what a difference it makes.

Yea I know, people think of rooting as a jailbreak foe iPods but on ipods you instantly get a "custom rom" on here there's more work involved to installing a rom and each phone is different so you have to do research how to root each phone and how to install recovery...
