Screen strength

I just went to AT&T and my friend let me play with the phone for a minute, I noticed that he already had a pretty serious scratch on it (the phone was the demo one but it was never put on display, it's just been passed around the store). It was very visible and deep enough to feel. What kind of protection does this thing have? I was under the impression that it was that gorilla glass stuff but now I don't know. I'm hoping that somebody more knowledgable can fill me in as this kind of worries me a bit.

This thread indicates that the Galaxy S does use Gorilla glass. There were some tests done on the Galaxy S, and screws and coins never scratched the screen, but box cutter did. Drops short of 5' 3" also did not break the screen, but that height did it, you can find the gory details here. I feel that the screen is pretty strong, gorilla glass or not. Not indestructible, but good enough.
