Help scrolling issue, Andorid or phone at fault?

Hi

I have searched for a solution to this but have not found an answer, and i dont know if it is a hardware or a software fault. Basically when scrolling with my Desire HD it will randomly scroll down rapidly to the bottom in like half a second, way, way quicker than you could if you tried. It does this mostly in the internet browser and very occasionally in other apps, GoSMS/menu etc. i can't honestly say if it started after the 2.2 update so can't pin it down to that but it is very annoying.

I try scrolling at a diagonal as opposed to up and down when i can and this seems to help but i want to sort it out.

Anyone know where to start in figuring out which is at fault?

I have tried that but it hasn't made any difference, I even tried a different browser but it has no effect. i am starting wonder if a particular part of screen is broken as it seems to happen in a particular spot in the middle of the screen (sometimes when using SlideIT the word will break even though my finger doesn't leave the screen.) I don't know if it is resistive or capcitive so cant figure out if this is possible but it is looking more like a hardware fault than a software one :(

I have also this problem now and then, but since becoming aware of it I've learned to live with it by tapping the screen as soon as I see it happening and then it stops scrolling. Somewhat annoying, yes I agree.

slightly reassuring that it can happen with any type but it still annoys me. Before it was just rapid scrolling now and then where as now it is making a text message written with slideIT the same speed or longer as normal texting as i have to go back and correct stuff....if it gets much worse i will have to send it back which will be an inconvinience. It seems to be getting slowly worse.

i haven't dropped, squashed or knocked my phone once so no idea what it could be.

I haven't noticed any signs of that it's getting worse over time, but maybe I'm in for a surprise :) As I don't do any serious typing I'm not that affected by it. I haven't a clue what functions are in place that might have influence on this, but maybe a factory reset might help you, at least it sounds better than sending the unit back for "repair".:(

An observation today: this speedy scrolling happened several times for me this morning, very unusual. I noticed that every time it happened the CPU was 100% busy (I was installing Market updates at the time). So my thinking now is that maybe this is a result of conflicting threads or tasks where one steals CPU cycles badly needed by another thread or task. This might prevent screen taps to be evaluated correctly by the system. Wild guesses, I know... You may want to install CpuNotify, which is a nice little app constantly showing you the current CPU load. This way you can see if what I've just said seems to apply to you as well. I will keep an eye on this in the future myself. I look forward to your observations.

hmmm interesting theory. I have just downloaded it but apparently my cpu is 100% at rest?!!!

I have disabled backgorund data and usb debugging which made a major difference before but what the hell is rinsing my cpu now??! by far the biggest battery usage all goes on android system according (according to the brakdwon of it) and I can probably go 14 hours before i need a recharge.

If it is something that is caning my phone then that very well could have something to with it.

let me know how you get on.

Try SystemPanel Lite or Android System Info (both free) to see if you can pinpoint the consuming app. It might also be a widget. If you go Menu-Settings-About phone-Battery-Battery use, maybe that can give some clues also. Perhaps someone else reading this can give better advice how to determine what is consuming CPU.

Ok i will try downloading one of those, the battery usage option in android is how i monitor what i am using but it deosn't say very much, if i restart my phone, then the screen wil be the biggest user by far, yet if i use different apps and widgets and dont restart for a while then it says android system will be the buiggest user. I m guessing it sone of these but i do kep them to a minimum.

I have searched several times for hints and tips on speeding it up (hence the usb debugging and background data changes) but have yet to find anything to get it right down to an acceptable speed/battery lifetime

cheers for your help

Ooops, I almost forgot. In the passed I opened a thread about when I had the 100% CPU problem, and the advice I got then was to enable USB Debugging. And that seemed to help. I believe you said that you've disabled it, so why not try to enable it again to see if it changes things. My 2p...

ah sorry thats a typo from me, it is on, and that was the solution suggested to me....android system info seems pretty detailed so hopefully i can figure out what is eating the usage later tonight.

ok so i tried android system info but it doesn't give a break down of the android system which i still hogging my resources by about 70-80%. the other one is htc sense remote at about 15-20% then android system info...inevitably with the rest. how can i find out which android running processes are making it run all the time? is there an app that can do that?

at least i know that 2.2.1 is killing unused programs as it is meant to and that no 3rd party apps/widgets are being resource hogs.
