Scrolling without selecting?

This may be (probably is ) a dumb question, but when scrolling through my list of contacts, especially within the "Phone" screen", flicking on the screen to initiate scrolling usually just ends up selecting the entry I happen to touch ... resulting in a few random calls to people I didn't intend on calling. Is there a way to decrease the sensitivity when scrolling or am I just doing it wrong?

You're doing it wrong.

Your finger should have longer-term contact with the screen than a tap, when scrolling.

To select something your finger leaves contact with the screen without any vertical or horizontal movement. Don't let your finger leave the screen until you've moved your finger.
