SD Card Data completely gone!

I turned the phone off, Removed the battery, removed the SD Card. Then I replaced the card, replaced the battery and turned the phone on. The phone gave an error saying "The SD Card has been removed. Insert a new one."

The card is now blank? What happened?
 
Nevermind. I took the card out and restarted the phone without the card. Then turned the phone off, insterted the card and turned it on. All data was there. Phew!
