Help SD card died

All of a sudden today my phone says that the SD is blank. It won't let me format it so I assume it's dead. What would cause this? I have most of the stuff backed up except some recent pictures so that's not a huge issue. This is the first time I have ever had a memory card die so just curious of there is a common cause. Thanks for any feedback.
 
Before you give up. Did you go into settings and see if the card was unmounted? Even if it says mounted I would unmount and mount. Also, I would take the card out and see if your computer can read the card.
