if i place a ringtone in \media\audio\ringtones on my sd card then selecting a contact and pressing menu->options causes a freeze and a black screen and i have to remove and replace the battery to regain use of the phone ... if i delete the ringtone, no problem, but the ringtones not corrupted it's an ok file and it doesn't matter what ringtone i put there, any ringtone in the folder going to cause the same problem anyone can help?

What kind of file are you using and how large is it? Also, if using ringtones from the SD card, perhaps try creating a folder on the root of the card called Ringtones. < Note the capital R. Try placing in there instead of using the /media directory route.
