Seamless WiFi

Hi i have a smartphone but don't want to pay for a data plan. Now i do use the phone on my personal wifi with free texting apps. The question that i had was is there a app that will recognize open wifi networks and automatically connect to it so when in im a place in the city where there is open wifi i can automatically get the texts from the texting app and not need a data plan and just use the phone on wifi. I think that it would be a smart idea if there isnt one out there yet to have one and i think it would be quite profitable. Thanks for your time.

Android will connect automatically to any network you have approved. Example you go to Wendy's and it tells you there is a WiFi and you tell it to connect next week you go back to Wendy's and it will just connect.

Be sure and turn your mobile data off in settings so it does not eat battery

Personally I hate most public WiFi hot spots due to the following reasons:
  • Someone can hack you quite easily
  • To browse securely, need to use SSH tunnel
  • You often need to register
  • It takes ages for the login page to appear (see above)
  • I'm in a pub, why do I need to do the above if it's just a quick pint?

Unless you're on BT home broadband which allows you public WiFi as well, I think most public WiFi is a romantic notion!
