Help Search SMS - is there a way?

I have looked for a way to search your SMSs. I sometimes need to reference a text from a long time ago. I am used to being able to just search like on a blackberry. I don't see a function in the stock sms program to do that. Am I missing it?

I hope the next OS has a search SMS function. I bet there are 3rd party apps that can do that.... handcent maybe? I used it for like a day but I liked the stock better... Don't want to be iphony at all.

Assuming you are running Android 2.2 or later...

Go to any Home screen, tap Menu->Settings->Search->Searchable Items and check "Messages." Standard Google search should now be able to search text messages.

Also, most 3rd party SMS apps will search. I don't use Handcent any more, but I assume it searches. Go SMS definitely searches messages for either text or user.

Work around I found that worked, use smsbackup+ to back up your SMS's then you can search them using the label/date search in Gmail.

Its not perfect, but it works.
