Securing files - encryption?

Hi, I am a new HTC Desire user and wish to synchronise a file on my PC that contains sensitive information with my phone.
Is there any way of securing this file on the phone with for example an encryption key so that in the event of my phone being lost or stolen the file will not be easily accessible?

Thanks in anticipation of some useful suggestions - I have learnt so much from this forum already
