Securing Your Android Captivate

This is my first Android, and I am getting pretty concerned about security. What security tips do you use to make sure your phone and data are safe?
- Anyone using a complex pattern for unlocking your Android?
- Is there a passcode method instead of pattern unlocks?

I too would like to hear some suggestions and/or security measures you guys are taking. As far as I know having a passcode isn't possible, only a pattern which I personally hate. I mean why did they do that??? Just to be "different" from the iphone? Most of this phones UI imitates the iphone why not the passcode...
