Root security issues with custom roms

Viper023

Newbie
i have been messing around with installing my first custom rom with root support today and im just wondering,,,,, is there any security issues with custom roms? As in, personal data/account login information being sent back to the creators of the roms? Or tracking information being stored. Or am i just paranoid? thanks, logan

Is it possible? Probably.
Are you being paranoid? Probably. :)

I'd say that if you're flashing a ROM that's been around for a while and nobody is complaining about it hijacking their information then you're safe.

BTW, the same could be said for a stock ROM, do we know for SURE that the mfg didn't put something in there that gathers some sort of info? Nope, we just believe that they didn't.

im just afraid of logging in with my gmail account info and my facebook account info while using any custom ROM. I know the possibility is probably small but theres still a chance of something happening.

Currently im using FROSHEDYO V10, and so far everything has been great with this ROM. Does anyone have problems using this ROM or security thoughts or issues with this ROM.

thanks

I've used KAOS, Nonsensikal, and am currently on FroShedYo - Never seen anything on any of them to worry me.

Just be sure you get the ROM from a reputable source (XDA Forum). You can contact the developer and/or hundreds (if not thousands) of other users for any issues

You have a LOT more to worry about when installing apps then ROMs.

Many (if not most) of the custom ROMS are GPLed, so you should be able to examine the source and see if they are doing anything fishy. The fact that they GPL and publish source suggests to me that they are on the up-and-up.

Any app or service that requires root user access will be interrupted by the SU applications, so at the very least you will know if something is trying to intercept data. Google account info with gmail and the market are communicated with Google-written apps, not part of the ROM, and I think Google uses something like 0auth, so passwords aren't stored.

Maybe I am talking out my butt here, but I think you have more to worry about with third party apps.
