Help security screen update/replacement?

the pattern security is neat at first, but it has a lot of drawbacks - making it too complex increases chance of error, which means you have to keep repeating the swipe.
Repeating the swipe keeps showing the failed pattern on screen (didnt find a way to disable it) and so person standing next to you has a pretty good idea what you are doing.
If its too short, its again easy to steal...

So my question is - what are good replacement for screen lock out there? Or perhaps someone found a way to disable showing failed swipes?
