Got Evo about 7 weeks ago and have been on the forums before then. Have considered rooting for the last few weeks and just wanted to double check a few things.

baseband: 2.15.00.09.01
build number/software number: 3.30.651.2
kernel: 2.6.32.15

[Following these steps correctly will enable root? Correct?]
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 S-OFF - Got the Game Upset Edition - Updated 12.16.10 - xda-developers

All I'm interested in now is... rooting the device (which is S-off [correct me if wrong]), leaving the stock rom as it is, no custom ones (for now at least), deleted bloatware and achieving wifi tether.

Believe I read that the device is wiped clean when flashing roms, so if i maintain stock rom...will I still have current settings on my device?

Once rooted, creating a nandroid would be the first thing I do. Found this off wiki... can someone let me know if this is the correct way for creating a nandroid backup?

Making a backup

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode
  2. Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img)
  3. Select Nand Backup (may vary depending on recovery.img)
  4. Follow on screen directions to complete
  5. Wait for it to complete.
Congratulations, you now have a Nandroid backup!
Restoring a backup

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode
  2. Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img)
  3. Select Nand Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img)
  4. Select your 'Device-ID' from the list (You will most likely only have one device listed)
  5. Select the backup you want to restore (Latest should be last on list)
  6. Follow on screen directions to complete
  7. Wait for it to complete.
Congratulations, you now have restored to a previous Nandroid backup!

Thanks for taking a peek and the feedback. After reading various threads, the process to manually root doesn't seem so daunting, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything crucial.

1. What hboot are you running? Is it 2.02?? If you don't know how to check, power off, then power on while holding volume down and that will take you to your boot loader. At the top left you'll be able to see what version hboot you currently have on your EVO. If it's not 2.02 you can use the unrevoked 3.21 one click root method. If it is hboot 2.02 then follow the instructions in the link you referred to above.

2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs You can find rooted stock ROMS here as well as pretty much any custom ROMS currently out.

3. Yes, you will maintain your settings after you flash a rooted stock ROM

4. And finally yes, that is the correct way to make a nandroid backup.

Yeah, hboot is 2.02 (forgot to put it in).

Have another question, last 3 steps from xda:
12A) Ok so you got kicked to the boot loader. It should scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13

12B) Ok so the phone booted into a rom. Power the phone off. Then repower the phone on pressing power and vol-down at the same time. It should take you into the bootloader and scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13

12C) Ok so the phone is stuck at a white htc screen. Power the phone off by pulling the battery. Then repower the phone on pressing power and vol-down at the same time. It should take you into the bootloader and scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13
13) Ok your phone is rooted now, and you should be inside the rom. The rom you just flashed is Sprint Lovers 12/16/10 build rom with the modified recovery. Download a rom of your choice copy it to the root of your sd card and flash it. But type the following first

adb shell mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG-MR.zip
adb reboot recovery

14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a different custom rom than the one thats included in the package cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.

If I don;t want the Sprint Lovers rom... do I just not flash the last file from the previous step? I just want root access and want to leave rom as is? Or am I missing the mark and I NEED to flash a Rooted Stock Rom?

Yeah, hboot is 2.02 (forgot to put it in).

I'm not familiar with the Sprint Lovers ROM, it sounds like a rooted stock rom. But if you want a for sure rooted stock ROM head over to the link I referred to in my last post and choose one of the 3.30 OTA updates under the "Stock ROM" section, download, place onto root directory on your SD Card, boot into recovery, choose flash zip from SD, choose zip you saved, then flash.

Will probably be attempting this next weekend when I get some down time from work. Appreciate the help, was getting a bit discouraged since no one popped in for 2 days.

Cool beans. Let the forum know how it goes, and if you need further assistance, we'll help the best we can!

I would HIGHLY recommend doing EVERYTHING that thread suggests.....I wouldn't try to customize steps. Even if you do end up with a custom ROM, who cares. If you achieve root, then that is a huge victory. We can get you back to stock if that is all your worried about. Again, if you are using that longhand method, do NOT cut any corners.

Would follow it exactly when I do it, unless a one-click method is available before then. Good point on the custom rom, could always flash a stock rom afterword. Guess I'll be reading up on that for now.

2 days and nothing... Thanks for the help.

What a dick.

The answers are already on the forum, for one thing. You could have used those 2 days looking for your answers. Secondly, you will find that there is someone that can answer nearly any question you have about these phones if you are patient. You know, most people have lives outside of answering your questions on an internet forum.

Are you serious? I was merely expressing my frustration. New threads were made and members were responding to their questions, while mine had 0 replies with quite a few views. Maybe just maybe, all the time before I posted this thread [so let me see... like 4 weeks], I WAS researching and reading. Yes, I know someone will answer if patient...but with all the members on here... 48 hours is actually quite a long time for a thread [with questions] to go unanswered. Lastly, I understand people have lives, I am one of them. I work 11 hours/5 days a week and when I have some spare time, I might end up on the forum... just like others do with their extra time. I would appreciate it next time for you to refrain from such childish responses. It was/is not the input I was looking for and possessed no helpful information.Thanks.

4 weeks of research and you couldn't find an answer on how to back-up and restore a nand? Not trying to be a jerk, but your second post was pretty crappy. There are a lot of people here that love to help, but sometimes for whatever reason threads get over looked. Next time just write "bump" and i'm sure you will get a some help a little faster. No need to be condescending...

I'm a bit dumfounded. First, my post was already answered 100% to my complete satisfaction (gave thanks/acknowledgment to other members who were glad to help and mentioned nothing about being condescending). Next, I still think with all the registered members (over 260k) that someone might have responded w/in a two day window. However, no one did, so I vented a little general frustration (and if you look back up, it wasn't in a yelling tone of voice [no exclamation mark]) ... hoping that someone might come along with some advice. I received some great help and was completely content.
Then the next post I get is by a senior member calling me a dick and accusing me of not realizing that the info is elsewhere on the forums and that people have lives and not the time to respond to me. This is a forum. People respond to other people's posts. Then two other senior members (yes I realize status is due to postings, but nonetheless) side/give thanks to the person who insulted me. I don't quite understand this.

Mod: Thread can be closed/locked. I've been given the advice I was seeking.
I've seen other people ask how to do something that is a stock setting of the phone... like add an app to the homescreen or add music to the sd card... and no one calls them a dick and tells them to look in their smart phone manual for the answer. Why? Because it's unnecessarily rude and doesn't help them. I was just expecting the same courtesy.
