Help Send/receive sms using google chrome

I know this has been covered before and I hate to be "that guy" but I'm having trouble finding the right app/method. What I need is an app (preferably free or cheap) that will enable to send and receive sms messages in my chrome browser. I've seen it around but never bothered getting it till now that I use my laptop in class. I need the extension from google chrome specifically as I was one of the lucky ones to receive a Cr-48 chrome laptop. Thanks in advance

A Google Voice account/number will do that perfectly. From ANY browser, in fact.

oh? Do tell. I have a google voice account already but haven't activated the second number. Ideally I would like to do this without changing my number, and giving it out to people again.

You can use the GV website to send and receive SMS. It's very simple: Login to your GV account and click the Text button in the upper left. (see image)

You will, unfortunately, have to give your GV number out or you could just send new SMS from it until everyone falls inline.

You need to download the Google Voice plugin for your browser. Then you will recieve sms on your phone and your PC. Its a very nice feature. Google Voice does have port forwarding for existing cell numbers. WARNING. Be Carefull. Port forwarding will cancel your service with your carrier and you will have to start another one. So if you are not up for new every 2 then you will be charged early termination by Verizon. I have not done this so im not 100% sure how it works. Check this out first.
Google Voice - What's new in Google Voice

The GV app or plugin is not required. You can do everything needed from the Google Voice site (voice.google.com) Also, if you do decide to use Google Voice turn off SMS on your phone in Google Voice Settings (In upper right click Settings -> Voice Settings -> Phones tab -> Click Edit underneath your wireless phone number and uncheck "Receive text messages on this phone" Otherwise you will receive the SMS on your phone as well as through Google Voice.

Thanks for the advice guys but I really don't want to use my GV number, I'd just prefer to use my existing verizon one

True. You do not need the GV plugin. I just like the Plugin because it puts a little icon on your chrome browser which to me makes it a little easier and less steps and adds some nice features.

growler13, Did you check out that link I posted? At the top of the page is number porting. It sounds like it may be too much hassle but its the only option i can find to use my existing cell number instead of GV number. Again be careful and read about the charges and how it works.

Yeah but I'm not taking my chances with messing with my contract, and paying $20 just so I can text secretly in class

There are so many more advantages to Google Voice as opposed to the regular SMS.

1) You can list your Google Voice number on websites and screen the heck out of your calls when they call in through GV (I have my GV number on Facebook, among other places - go ahead, call me - see if I answer! Send me SMS spam - see if I care!)

2) GV can handle your VMs too - even from calls made to your direct cell line.

3) GV automatically splits long messages into multiple SMS (from the website I can send 3 SMS lengths (roughly just under 500 7-bit chars) in a single SMS before it starts asking me "Really??"

4) In GV, you can mass SMS everyone on your contacts about hte new number - you don't ahve to do it from your phone.

5) GV uses the same Google contacts as your phone, and will allow you ot send SMS to people by their name just like your phone.

6) As mentioned above, you can do it from any browser - as long as you have Internet access.

It really is worth your time - it will take some time to get it all set up - but once it is, no more of the following:

1) Having to pay for unlimited SMS on your contract (or your folks having to pay for your unlimited SMS)

2) Having to worry about your Service provider deleting VMs that you have saved every 2 weeks to clear space

3) A lot less issues with memory usage on early-model Android phones

4) Ability to search all your SMS any time, anywhere.

I still pay $5 / month for 250 SMS - b/c GV doesn't do MMS *yet*. Plus, I have a few friends who simply do not pay attention and send me texts at the old number, and one friend who likes to send pics.

Other than that, though, all my SMS traffic goes through my GV number.

Oh, every Google Account you have can also have a GV number - even GAFYD can. I have 2 regular Google accounts and 2 GAFYD (about to set up number 3 domain as well) - I have 3 GV numbers so far - 2 for my regular accounts and one for my original domain.

You can't shake a stick at that.
