Help Sensation(al) Internet problems

My justification for getting it was that my girlfriend is still using my old se k800i, and its knackered now, so she can have the dhd, otherwise I would prolly send it back and live with the dhd a bit longer.

Ha ha that is what I did, mine arrives tomorrow the other half can have my DHD.

If all else fails - if it's any setting problem - you can long-press your net name in the settings list -- or use the menu -- and manually set your network parameters.

If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure what else to suggest - sometimes we see routers and devices disagreeing on when/how to arbitrate. That's usually been on the device side (a whole release pervaded Linux and Macs on this one not long ago) but it's been known to happen as the router's fault as well.

:(

Well - best luck, compadre, we're all pulling for you!

Thanks for all the help. I'm not sure about the long press idea, it just seems to give me the choice to change the password and security, nothing else.

I have recently found that there is an issue with other phones running 2.3.3 and my router (an old Speedtouch provided by Be), which don't seem to like each other. It is currently looking like the problem is not phone related, but is a problem with the router, so I may need a new router. Not the worst thing in the world, as we have been having a few problems with it recently.

Thanks again to everyone who has tried to help, it has made a big difference not feeling on my own trying to sort the problem. I will post an update if it gets resolved in case anyone else has the same issue in the future.

A new router doesn't sound like a bad move but it might be worth checking whether there are any firmware updates available for the Router anyway. Don't know Speedtouch well but should be able to log into the router admin page and do this.

It's alive!!!

I have managed to get a working internet connection. Following some advice on the Be forums (my ISP), they gave the settings necessary to use a static IP, and that has worked. I now have access to the net from my phone over wireless.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

I have the sensation. Currently on holiday in the philippines and can't get Internet access over wifi - could at home in England. Can on my iTouch and iPad. Can't really ask the hotel to check router settings. Any other suggestions? Currently getting disappointed with my first android...

I was just about to suggest that when I saw your post, I'm pleased I read the whole thread! ;)

I had the same problem with my Desire. My phone wouldn't connect, then eventually my phone connected and my PC wouldn't connect, and I couldn't figure out what was up. Then it hit me; I had set up my PC and Xbox to use a static IP but hadn't set up my Desire to use one, so my Desire was attempting to use IPs I had reserved for the other devices.

I wish there was a way to set up a static IP for some networks and dynamic for others on these devices! If I'm on the train/in a pub/cafe/etc I need a dynamic IP, but I need a static IP on my home network.

As noted in the above two posts -- does your Sensation use a static IP on your home network? If so, you need to change the settings so that it uses a dynamic IP when you're on another network otherwise you get IP conflicts with other connected devices.

You might be able to see the current settings for your iPad's WiFi if you look through the settings option. I don't have mine on me at the moment,so i can't check. If the iPad does show subnet mask, gateway addresses and DNS server, just copy the values to your sensation. You will need to select static ip within the wireless settings section, then just pick an ip address (change the last set of digits in the ip address from the iPad). You may need to try a few times to get a unique ip address but that may work.
Don't give up, Android isn't aoways as easy to set up as Apple but the extra you get from it is worth the effort.

Depends on your router. At home I have a Draytek (2820n) and it's set to give out ip addresses via DHCP but that was a pain when using a browser to access various apps on the phone as it could easily change. Found that the Draytek allows you to specify an ip bind list. So I just assigned an ip address for my phone's mac address. Works for me.

Thanks triviadave. Tried the static IP using settings from the iPodPad and got it to work. Then set it back to dynamic and it obtained a dynamic IP and still worked! It must have got it's android nickers in a twist! I'm an ex-geek and need to get back into this stuff! ;-)

I do the same on my router. I have it set to DHCP for a certain range of addresses and give static IPs to certain device MAC addresses. That way I get the best of both worlds. Most routers/modems can do this. Check your setup. The MAC address of most devices is printed somewhere on the device or in it's IP settings page. Your router will also list the connected devices and show the MAC addresses. If you are unsure just connect one device at a time, find the MAC then assign an IP to it.
