Sensation video input ouput format

i'm considering the sensation coming from the BB9700. My question is: it is possible to record and play back your videos on a different format than 3gp?
Here are the video formats of the sensation: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3)
I want to be able to view my videos recorded on the phone on my laptop or hdtv using a universal video format. The last thing i want to do is struggle to view videos on my hdtv from the sensation. I appreciate your simple and helpful answers.

Their is HDMI output through the Micro-USB port, if you wanna get the adapter, but I am not aware of being able to record in anything besides 3gp. I know VLC will play it on your laptop though. I hope this is helpful
