Root Sense vs AOSP

Dillinger

Newbie
Let me start by saying I have never used AOSP and recently rooted my phone for the first time.

I am currently running mikg 3.0 with a stock kernal. Prior to rooting I never had great battery life but I feel like it has gotten substantialy worse since.

This leads me to ask, can I expect better life from an AOSP ROM as opposed to a sense based ROM and if so, do the AOSP roms have WiFi tethering?

aosp roms do tend to give better battery life as sense seems to be a resource hog. aosp roms do not have sense and thus they tend to be smaller in size as well. they do take more tweeking then normal. you will have to:

1.flash the gapps file since google apps are not included in the roms. you can get the gapps file that has the sprints visual voice mail cooked in by going to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html and scroll down to the aosp roms.

2.you may need to flash the qualcomm driver to fix the gps. it is found here:[FIX][AOSP][MIUI] All GPS fixes! - xda-developers

3.if you want you can also try google voice instead of the vvm that is included with the gapps file. but either way you will need a voice message app of some sort as aosp roms do not have it.

so you see there are some extra steps in trying aosp roms. but i can say that with cm7 and the tiamat sbc kernel i was getting the best battery life out of any rom/kernel combo i have tried.

keep in mind however, that battery life and what works for some may not work for you. there are too many variables to determine if this will work for you.

and one last thing, have you tried and kernels as well as use setcpu?

edit:almost forgot to mention that yes aosp roms will usually have a tethering option. but because of the new tethering policy we can't really discuss it. please read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/480569-psa-about-tethering.html

I would look into maximizing your current battery life before blaming it on the ROM.

Sense based ROMS are a little more battery intensive, but there is really a LOT of other contributing factors. I would check into replacing your kernel first.

I hate all the things we have to do to get good battery life... I wanna be able to see my phone in all its glory. I say try CM7 with Tiamat+SBC and see how it works for you.
