Root Separate app from market

Trel

Android Enthusiast
I see in titanium backup if I bought the pro, I could separate an app from the market. Is there any way I can do that manually?

Er... I guess you could copy the apk from /data/app to /sdcard, then uninstall the app, then reinstall the apk from /sdcard

That's what I thought. But as soon as I install it again, the market wants to update it again.

(Unlimited Shazam btw, I don't wish to lose that)

This is a trick that has worked for me...

Go ahead and click "update" from the market, and as soon as you get the "downloading" progress bar, hit "cancel." Your old version will still be there, and your market link will be broken for good. Just to be safe, have your old (desired) version backed up in case this goes wrong. This is obviously an unintended consequence of canceling an update, but it does exactly what you want (or it has for me). Neall

He has already stated that he doesn't want Shazam to keep bothering him with updates, because he wants to keep the old version that gives you unlimited uses instead of restricting you to a certain amount per month.

oh...well that would make sense. But can't you just stop it from automatically updating and not update it by mistake or something. Pretty much just ignoring the updates.

Is the app itself notifying you about the update? If so, then it will probably continue to do that even if the app is separated from the market.

That doesn't last. It eventually re-associates.

I guess your mileage will vary. I "disassociated" K-9 mail this way, on the advice of an android developer, because recent K-9 versions don't properly support imap push for UW-imap servers. I did this with K-9 V2.403 back in February, and it's stayed this way for 10 months so far. I guess to those who want to break their link with the market, it's worth a try. If it doesn't work... no harm done :)
