I know there are many ways.. but what is the best and simplest approach to rooting a Samsung Galaxy SII AT&T? Links? I am just trying to help a female friend who lives 1000s of miles away in India. Any suggestions? She is quite good with jailbreaking an iPhone but the Android I know is a little more 'involved'. Suggestions?

no, i tried to root my phone using zedomax, lost my wifi, tried to unroot, bricked my phone, unbricked my phone and rerooted, still have no wifi, trying to flash custom ics rom but for some reason i dont have clockworkmod.....possibly another root would work idk but i know zedomax isnt the one to go with if your lookin for something easy

Just to be sure, if she lives in India are you positive it's an i777 (U.S. AT&T Version?) and not a i9100 (International Version)?

This worked for me just dandy yesterday. Added benefit, doesn't increment the "flash counter" on the phone:

[GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter

I used method method 2c to root my phone, since my orig baseband version was at I777UCKK6. I then used method 3a to install a customized kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery (I chose Siyah 2.6.14 for this).

There's only one 'gotcha'. After method 2c is applied, your WiFi won't work until you do a "Settings...Privacy...Factory data reset". Yes, this is a pain, so make sure you have backups. I haven't had the phone long, so I just went through the out-of-the-box setup again afterwards.
