services that cost you money!!

im new to the whole android thing.is it safe to use diff home screens when you go to instal them and it says "app has access to the following"
:services that cost you money
directly call phone numbers.
could someone shed some light on what this means??i dont want to instal and find out something has used the app to make phone calls that i didnt initiate, might be para but want to be sure its safe,ty:confused:

I don't think you're being paranoid at all. If it's a pucker application (as mirrorimage said, read the reviews), it will just be offering to call a number for you. For example, if it's an application that has film reviews, it might offer to dial the number of the local cinema for you.

cheers guys, ive had a look at reveiws and doesnt seem to be anyone mentioning it but wasnt sure as its my 1st android phone(htc desire)awesome kit and wanted to modify the home screen but when i went to either install or buy the likes of crazy home,GDE,tag home, ahome and all the home apps they all say they can call numbers that cost you money or modify sd card, what app are you guys using??just want a decent theme but they all work if you dl some kind of home app,

The access means that the app can read the information, not take control and call people from your phone.

The access to the SD card simply implies that the app can 1: Read the information there and 2: Save files to the SD card rather than waste space on the internal memory - for example Beautiful widgets stores downloadable skins on the SD card.

In the operation of a home alternative it does not seem like an extreme thing to be accessible, as some of the included functionality might need the information.

An exception to this is apps which require use of the network connection, take news readers or weather apps which can be set to fetch information in certain intervals.

Hainman, I'd recommend you read this to get a better understanding of how Android works: http://androidforums.com/android-ap...ps-avoid-viruses-guide-those-new-android.html

One of my condition for downloading apps is if the apps request for a lot of access on my phone, I make sure one of the access is not Internet. One of the access I don't like: Your personal information - read Browser's history and bookmarks, read contact data, write contact data. Only app I have that asked for this permission is my anti-virus app (Lookout).

hi roze.thanks for the link to the thread, was very helpfull,on a wee note what kinda home app do u use if any??i just want nice theme but cudnt manage to put my apps on with the widget.i have soccer score sonic srewdriver and airhorn but when trying to modify my screens i cant see the apps in widget when i oress add??any ideas??

@ haiman,

I'm not sure what you mean home app, as in home screens launcher? What are you currently using? I'm using 2 basic ones right now, HelixLauncher2 and LauncherPro (just came on the market - beta) both don't really have much on themes...I've heard Home++ is quite popular.

i have soccer score sonic srewdriver and airhorn but when trying to modify my screens i cant see the apps in widget when i oress add??any ideas??

They are available when you press ^ but not as a widget to put on your desktop. You could add them to your desktop as a shortcut.

@roze.think ive sussed it,got pandahome 2 with a few themes.im like british rail,i get there eventually!!still not 100% sure about using card to buy themes n things on the phone,is it safe??
